I think that was the name of the place. It had a whole lot of stargates to use.
It saved my game since it sent me through a stargate and now I can't get it back. What is the ideal use for this thing? Use it when I am really deep into the systems to get back to earlier ones? Or donate it to Domina? What should've been my move? I had just passed Sanctuary when I accidentally used it.

you just found the Gem of Despair, prized by Domina followers these gems can bend space-time and bring the person holding it (and his/her spaceship) to the mythical system of Elysium.
The Elysium system is supposedly a system that was inhabited by the Ancient Races, a sort of stargate hub for local portions of stargate networks.

In theory, the best use for Gems of Despair is to use one when you are losing a battle and see no way to escape. For instance, your shields are gone, hull breach is imminent, and the attackers are faster than you. They are like Angband's scrolls of teleport level, if you are familiar with that game.

After St. Katherine's star, you may find an unknown level VII alien device for sale in various shops. This is the transpace jumpdrive. This device, when used on a stargate, will warp the player to Elysium. With the jumpdrive, you no longer need Gems of Despair to warp to Elysium except in an emergency.

If you still have an excess of halo gems, but you are unlucky enough to find enough other offerings (especially slave coffins) for Domina, the Halo gems will suffice for leveling up Domina rank.

Gems of Despair aren't intended for really dire straits. They have no usekey so activating them requires some time to scroll the use menu.

Soooo...... if I find another one and already have a jump drive, I should donate it to Domina for points?

I don't really need it for getting out of sticky situations at the moment. I'm not playing for a high score this time around.

Also, what are halo gems? Haven't run into those yet.

The gem of despair is a halo gem. Halo gem is a name for all of the different bluish gems that have various effects when used.

The Gem of Despair which you've already found, along with the Gem of Contrition, and Sacrifice.

Spoilers!

Despair = teleort
Contrition = time stop
Sacrifice = everything in HUD is reduced to zero HP, so if you can shoot it before it regens, insta kill. However, don't get shot yourself, as it removes your own hp.
