Anything out there?
I think it depends on you. As a sci fi geek I believe it is something nasty trying to take over the earth for our vast resources or what is left of them. If your more of a religious person you would no doubt find any of the 136 versions of the afterlife currently favored. Of course if your more into the whole hope thing then no doubt the Arielou or something like that will show up and show you how to properly cook Rocky Mountain Oysters and brew Civet Coffee.

scientifically speaking...
space is near a vacuum but it is not a perfect vacuum for a few reasons:
A. Quantum law says that many particles are popping in and out of existence, meaning that there is a baseline of matter that must exist in any amount of space at any one time (on a macro rather than quantum scale) This is when the in game item "quantum vacuum" which cancels this quantum law.
B. Gas expands to fill any space, so there are shells of increasingly disperse gasses from small and large amounts of gasses escaping from atmospheres of distant planets such as mars. So there are tiny amounts of gasses in space. Very, very tiny amounts.
Beyond the presence of mass, there are multiple objects that could be in interstellar space.
Asteroids: just randomly floating rocks in space.
Planets/planetoids: planets and moons that escaped a star's gravity and flew off into space (imagine that next time you look at the night sky: there could just be a massive gas giant flying at extreme speeds towards earth, just ready to disrupt our orbit just enough to send us to a fiery grave in the sun. Cheery thought.)
Brown stars: basically really, really huge rocky planets that can have several planets orbiting them but give off no light or detectable energy. (another cheery thought for the night sky )
radiation: just some basic radiation that exists everywhere in the universe
probes: a couple of probes humans sent into interstellar space
aliens: Personally, I don't think that sentient life exists elsewhere in the universe, but if you do maybe there's a massive armada completely surrounding the solar system traveling towards earth at near light speed, preparing to destroy earth in a huge and fiery bombardment, and harvest the minerals. (another cherry thought for the night sky)

I have been out far enough to know; there are only glitches and epilepsy and eventually you get stuck in an unpleasant brown green zone beyond the epilepsy zone where weapons don't work right and your ship cannot move.
You can only get this far out with an insane cheat ship. An acceleration and top speed of ten to the thirtieth if not more

Space. The Final Frontier.
Yeah, I remember Wolfy's thread about that. However, I think the pilot of the Sapphire in the intro screen (who is WAYYYY outside the galaxy) is bound to know.

Not to mention that the saphire is about the size of the galactic core
Well, the current theory states that that is in intergalactic space, rather than interstellar space, but obviously nobody knows, because it is completely undetectable outside of very specific atom collider microscopes.stealthx wrote:And don't forget about dark matter.

In my first game I got lost because I hit the "A" key and before I knew it I was out in space:
You will meet Zone encounters out there: some systems you will find a Pirate base.....but generally there is nothing much going on after the 7th square away from the system.
