Is saving the Korolov station in Charon easier in 1.06.....?

......or did I just get really lucky?

I'm in my first game playing v1.06 and was able to save the Korolov station in the Charon system with only one wingman (Volkov). I think the Drakes may have come out of the gate right next to me, instead of flying in from an unknown direction. In any case, I caught them all bunched up and moving slow. Slaughtered 'em so quickly with Broadsword missles that it was over before I knew it. It also seemed that there were far fewer Vikings and Corsairs involved in the attack than I'd encountered in previous versions.

The only times I'd ever managed to save the Korolov station in a previous version was in v1.05 playing Drako's "The Network" mod, when I was lucky enough to find a Commonwealth Fortress in one of the side branches before Charon. Therefore, in those games, I was able to do the Militia missions first, and then enter Charon with Volkov, Jenna and Rama in tow.

One other question too, while I'm on the topic: Why doesn't "Saved the Korolov station in Charon" show up in the list of "achievements & regrets"? "Destroyed the Fortress of the Charon Pirates" makes the list, and that's a cakewalk compared to saving the Korolov station....

I do not see anything different in the database : the station is NOT supposed to survive : this is why they treat you with an attitude when you save them.
But I have found that the game is not entirely evil toward the station regardless of the code, it plays it out but there have appeared variations that suggest the game wants something.....not sure exactly what but it acts like it is looking for something besides the normal program, like a timer check to be sure it did the job ; a way to react to a player's combat power...or it could just be me, but I see the game hesitate as if it KNOWS I am going to kick Pirate Ships all over the system if they get too close to my Mule.

could be that the newly fixed "interaction" attribute and the new behavior of area fragments are contributing at making the game easier ?

If it is easier in 1.06, it is NOT intentional. Can anyone figure out what changed?

I will try this : I think I have learned enough of 1.01's behavior trying to avoid the script for Rogue Command to spot a real action difference.
++ Negative on the " effect" , the Vikings took out the station before the drakes arrived on two repeat occasions ;
the initial wave forces DID appear smaller ...but I think it was just me.
I flew it with the Wolfen, Praetorian and the Cruiser I usually enjoy : I did it STOCK, no tricks, no Upgrades ..the station died quickly but the forces still seemed smaller then the "OMGravy!" they should have been...in my opinion, but again I think it was just me.

We seem to Want Charon to stop playing nice, even if cost a station.....but having a rescued station go functional ( such as spawn friendly stations in that event to help the player recover credits / fuel lost in battle might be an interesting twist for the future )

Next week I can do my traditional full playthrough, and I can confirm or deny any difficulty changes then. My main computer is dead atm, so I have done squat so far with 1.06 >.<

Don't forget about experience. Anyways I'll try Charon with no mods (except for a Charon start mod!)

I tried it, and failed. (I was really close though, Volkov probably would've changed the tide of the battle)
my weapons were:
lancer
MkIII howitzer.
I'm thinking that experience really is key to winning Charon, as a newbie would probably fail. Unless s/he has tons of stillettos, then they might have a chance.

Well, I think I was able to answer my own question: I just got really lucky. :P

I remembered that I'd zipped my .sav file along with the extensions I was using into an email to myself, when I moved the game to another computer shortly before entering Charon. So I was able to restart the game from that point and try again......., and again......., and again........,

I was in fact able to save the Korolov station again with just one wingman, ....... :D ....but only after five failed attempts.

I paid careful attention during all the do-overs, and am certain that in every instance the Drakes approached the station from extreme sensor range; they did not come out of the nearby gate. What I now think happened during my lucky first play through was that the Drakes just happened to spawn with the nearby gate directly between them and the station. So the gate and the normal traffic around it obstructed their line of fire as they approached. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and was able to blast them as the braked to keep from blowing past, before they were even able to bring their weapons to bear on the target. My ship was armed with an omni-TLC+fast with a collimator, that I used on the smaller pirates while waiting for the missile ships. Plus a Lancer and a NAMI launcher with Broadsword missiles which made short work of the Drakes when they arrived. Volkov was armed with his regular x-ray laser with a collimator, plus a NAMI launcher with a hundred Starburst missiles (thanks to Bobby's superb UG wingmen mod).

I suppose it's good to be good, but its better to be lucky.

so, in shortness...our experience is the problem, not the fleet.

Well for me, three well-armed wingmen make it a cinch...... But baring that, one wingman, good missiles, a modest amount of experience and a hefty portion of luck will occasionally carry the day.

YMMV, as they say in the car commercials.

Hey I just saved the Korolov Drydock in the Charon System last week!!!!! This is Trans104 I'm currently playing and I did it with Volkov and I got a Class V shield from the station boss. I guess experience is really needed for after all I've played this a couple of times to master it and same goes for all, right? And yes there's no mention of it in my stats. Drats! :x

I'm a new player and I just saved the Korolov Station in Charon with no wingmen (in fact, I don't even know how you get wingmen...) on my third ever time reaching Charon. I'm flying a Wolfen and using an AK505 that I looted as my main weapon. I took out most of the original spawn with my omnilaser and stilettos and then saw the second spawn coming in on the directional scanner and rushed to intercept them I took out two (out of six?) of the drakes myself and got a shot or two in on a couple of others before the friendlies finished them off in a melee around the base..

I was very surprised to notice the base still standing.

This was in 1.01. So I think that maybe the OP was just lucky like I was.
