positrons are the antimatter leptons opposite to electrons. Positrons can also be seen as beta+ rays. (so, radiation, essentially)
I like to imagine that the positron cannons are super-hyped positron emitting cathode cannons, while antimatter is essentially a barion antimatter kinetic cannon.
Of course, at the end, the game uses technobabble. So, don't take too seriously these arguments.

I'd say the positron has as much difference to the antimatter as the ion has to the kinetic/particle/blast/plasma and such. They're antimatters, true, but they're of different kind.
