On Memos from the Multiverse this week I've posted a short review of Downbelow Station, one of the books that has inspired Transcendence.

George,
You definitely made me want to read those books now ! :) brilliant !

Btw, the union sounds a lot like the corporate to me :) or at least like the half-evil version of it

I can definitely recommend Downbelow Station. It is a great book. I looked at the wikipedia page and found out there are others in the series that follow after it. Gonna have to give those a read.

And then the muderer-hobo arrives, decimating the Union within ten hours.
Nothing stands against them, and they are without mercy.
The Union is but a distraction to them, they continue to the edge of known space, approaching the celestial guardians...

Thanks for mentioning that George, now I want to read some more Hard, future history.

Thanks for the rec. I'd read the Faded Sun trilogy in omnibus in the past and it hadn't inspired me to seek out her other works. Downbelow Station makes a much better starting point.

The defining characteristic of the Union is the use of clones. They're very obviously the base for the Ares with a bit of red scare thrown in if that wasn't part of the Union already. The Azi, cloned and electronically indoctrinated, remind me of the New Soviet Man.

I just finished reading the amazing hard scifi books Dragon's Egg, and Starquake, by Robert L. Forward.
