Recently, while playing Transcendence, I noticed that some factions had certain themes with regard to the names of their ships, often in a manner that is relevant to the plot or enhances the storyline. Below are the factions in which I've noticed a theme in naming, as well as what the themes seem to bring to the table.
Commonwealth
Centurions were military officers in ancient Rome, trained to guard the empire.
'Aquila' is latin for "eagle", a symbol of the Roman Empire.
Brittania, the Roman conquered British island, though it could also reference Britain itself, considering the theme
So, three references to ancient Rome?
Ronin were warriors in feudal Japan
Alright, so a trend of fallen empires? Hold on, it gets better.
'Aurochs' were a type of cattle spread across multiple continents, until it went extinct in the 17th century.
Furthermore, with the state of the earth in the Transcendence universe, the CSCs named after continents, as well as the Terra itself, can also be said to be named after entities that have, in some form, fallen. While it is common among militaries to name their weaponry after fearsome combatants from history, the fact that all of the commonwealth ships seen in game are named after entities famous for declining, typically by internal means and/or complacency(England's loss of its colonies from rebellion, Rome's collapse from disloyalty and corruption, earth being ravaged by entities that were formerly from there, and the Aurochs being killed off by the species that had domesticated them) shows a notable parallel to the CW's current state.
Ares
The Ares ships tend to feature ships based on the features of mars, such as its landscape(Tundra, Sandstorm, Chasm, Cometfall, and Polar), and its moons(Deimos and Phobos). The relevance of this lies in the fact that the Ares have adapted completely to their new home, becoming more martian than human, and this influences every aspect of their being.
Huari
The Huari only have one ship, but its name, the Hurin, references a Tolkien novel in which a powerful hero acts as a savior to a people, but faces a tragic destiny later on. This is similar to how the player interacts with the Huari, especially considering the final prophecy issued by their leader.
Pirates (Credit Shrike)
All of their named vessels are a reference to piracy. Corsairs and Vikings are both groups that raided others throughout history and Sir Francis Drake was a historical figure of great importance to piracy. The frigates are not direct references to piracy, but all seem to be named after carnivorous species, such as the Orca, which attack weaker species for food in much the same way pirates attack Korolov freighters.
UAS ships (Credit Shrike)
All UAS ships are named after African ethnic groups.
Has anyone else noticed any significant names in the Transcendence universe?

Off the top of my head, Corsairs are another name for Privateers, and "Longzhu" translates to dragon, so you're actually collecting dragon balls in canon.

I like this.Shrike wrote:The naming themes may be a subtle jab at the CW from the corporations that build their ships.

Yes, the pirate ships are all themed as well: Corsair is a type of ship used for piracy in the past, the Barbary pirates were a problem in the Mediterranean for a long time, the vikings were kinda awesome, and Tripoli was a base for piracy as well at one point IIRC.

I noticed that as well. What do you make of the Drake class?Shrike wrote:Yes, the pirate ships are all themed as well: Corsair is a type of ship used for piracy in the past, the Barbary pirates were a problem in the Mediterranean for a long time, the vikings were kinda awesome, and Tripoli was a base for piracy as well at one point IIRC.

Virtually everything Ive made that isnt waiting for a name follows some kind of themed naming.

A bit of a duck there, I think.JohnBWatson wrote:I noticed that as well. Alternatively, could be named after Sir Francis Drake.
Wolfy<--Your pirates are named after a banned chloroflourocarbon used in fire extinguishers. I'd love to know the naming idea behind that.

That's downright impressive.Shrike wrote:

Other stuff: The UAS small gunships: 'Zulu', 'Oromo' and 'Sotho' are all ethnic groups in Africa (makes sense, since it's the United African States). "Mikeno" is a mountain in the DRC (and is also currently Sir Not Appearing In This Game).
I have an extremely good memory for random knowledge and trivia. Except popular culture and sports. And don't ask me to remember someone's name or face.

Also, there's an uncontacted tribe of people in the Ecuador region known as the Huaorani, who I believe are what the Huari are named after, but that's just speculation.

Actually the halon name is a bit of a poke of fun at simplified chemistry terminology thats sort of very tangentally related to piracy.

I believe Huari and Hurin are different tenses/forms of the word "lower" in the Quechua language. The Huari give off a major south american / Inca vibe to me.
