Contamination doesn't work on enemy ships

So I made a weapon that inflicts radiation on an enemy ship. I hit them with it, they started glowing green, and I hid on top of a nearby planet, waiting for something else to happen. I waited over 3 minutes and nothing seemed to happen; They were still attacking me, still alive.

How about making it work against enemy ships? Or am I missing something important, like for example, can differing values on the "Radiation" part of attack damage prolong or shorten the time until fatal exposure?

that's odd, it kills friendly ships, are you waiting long enough?(autopilot)

EDIT: it does kill enemy ships, it just takes a long time and so is not practicle except for dreadnaughts perhaps.

I use the XM300 missiles on the Phobos for a easy kill. Drop its shields and one missile is all it takes. But it does take a looooong time for it to die from radiation.
