They die so fast! :x
I tried the upgradable Rama and mule but the install device screen is bugged and docking is nearly impossible with Rama.

In regular/vanilla transcendence, here is a rundown of autons and wingmen and how long they last:

Autons

1) Auto Sentinel- This thing is pretty much a friendly hornet with marginally better armor... Dies in a flash.
2) 300D Defender- Slightly better than the Auto Sentinel, but it's lifespan is usually far shorter than even the Charon system.
3) 310A Aegis- See 300D Defender. It's the same thing with ICX slapped on
4) 200A Defective auton-
5) Mule- these guys are quite bad in the line of fire, but at least the shielding is decent. For increased lifespan, park on top of planets or asteroids.
6) 1M Battle auton- decent shielding, particle cannon... it'll last a couple systems into sung and marauder space. Not for long though. Dies before sanctuary more often then not.
7) 1Mi auton- it only has an EMP attack. It's lifespan is quite limited too- see above. Only use past sung space that it would probably survive is the CSC Antarctica (no shields! )

Wingmen-

Jenna- Her stats are inferior to the 1M battle auton (Ronin C). does that say something?
Rama- he actually will stick around for quite some time, but I had him get blasted by the Charon fortress before... >.< (don't ask how)
Volkov- His ship is quite resilient (Class V shields are incredible!), but he too will die very quickly in the systems near or past sanctuary.
Fleet guys- Don't even bother bringing them to the engagement zone- i just drop a crate on a planet and have them attack it while I lure the phobos we're supposed to attack over to a taikon...

the upgradable wingmen mod is indeed bugged(it didn't weather the upgrade to .99), this is a known problem and a newer improved version is in the works.

and yea, autons don't live long enough, the stations that can fix them come too late in game to be very useful.

do wingmen get fixed at auton dealers?

1) I see. What is the name on xelerus now?
2) I was going to point that out but I forgot.
3) no... :(

1M/i autons have another use:

1. get GoS

2. Go to Heretic.

3. Park atop gate planet (not the gate itself!)

4. use GoS when the Iocrym is sufficiently far away from the planet

5. use 1M/i autons (3+ is idea)

6. Blow up iocrym with plasma torch.

I generally don't find the Phobos' that bad as long as I'm decently armed - but I also stick mostly to playing the Wolfen. I could imagine those ion repeaters getting ugly for a freighter?

But yeah, the wingmen all get to play with a box somewhere around their home station - every wingman mission I have EVER had, they make it far harder rather than helping.

In a game where allies can be hit by your fire and space is crowded rather than sparse, they are just casualties waiting to happen, constantly blocking your lines of fire and adding little or no firepower to the engagement.

you need to be able to say *fire support* where they will form a line and start shooting at (or in the general direction of) the target.

Q-2,Q-A is the command for that FEI (for everyone's info). however that usefulness wears down pretty quickly if:
1) target is fast and/or
2) target is small(ish)

And yes, I do play the wolfen, but usually the reason I fight the phoboses is because I'm trying to get a kaidun shield (which correctly implies my previous shield is something lousy)

I usually don't bother with Wingmen/Autons. In fact, I usually just use autons to ID them, and then have them stay at the nearest armed station. I typically don't even get Wingmen. In my current game, I'm just a dock away from both Rama and Volkov. I just think it's a bummer when they die, and so I don't even bother with them in the first place.

not quite, you have to stay with them and aim. I would like them to give fire support and let me go and dogfight.

I would like a letter to let a horde of mules stop at your current position (on top of a planet) to manuever them easily into safety
