Memory usage?

How much memory should Transcendence be using? I have a save where it eats 300mb or so and winds up in an unplayable swap frenzy (at least on my system- admittedly overdue for an upgrade)
I didnt have more than an occasional glitch on the old 98, so I was wondering whether I have found some pathological eat-all-the-memory system...

This was in 0.98a. I just tried the file in 0.98b and it seemed fine.
