How can different ships play differently?
Also how can we encourage people to use different ships?
My first thoughts on this are make beginning ships have a chance of being a starting ship. Then you can treat the ship as an item with all the item differences can apply to them like sets. A different idea is have ships have a criteria on what they can equip so a ship can not be compatible with Bushido weapons and armor.

One thing you'll need to watch out for is forcing the player into a single upgrade path as they are with weapons currently. Either you have a huge selection of ships, or you give the player options for upgrading their current hull. Which might slightly defeat the purpose...I dunno.
I think before you implement this system, you need to add in a ship-changing system. I think trying to add in both systems at once might be a little too complicated for playtesting.

how bout this?- assign all the generic ships (every thing but things like the antarctica or other "boss/story/special" ships) a cost. Then give the player a certain number of credits to spend on their first ship. They can then purchase hull-upgrades (allowing add-on armor and expansion slots) or buy a whole new ship from various entities. Wrecks can be repaired for use at a fairly high cost.

We have a solution for randomiziung weapons and their effects. But this is much harder. Advantages like differetn types of compabilty, like gun ships having support for 2 missle launchers. ETC
