I would like an option to decrease the speed of thrust or turning voluntarily. Right now if you play a fast playership like the Wind Slaver you find yourself oversteering with a quick key tap. This is especially noticeable with the wolfen when you are trying to escort freighters (and wish to slow down) or if you are trying to snipe something and keep going two turning points instead of one.

Right now I am feeling quite comfortable with the freighter just because it is so precise when it shoots. Sure it can't turn as fast, but it can spray weapons fire (shoot while turning) with great accuracy.

any ideas on how you would like this to be done? I have seen several ideas on this idea and similar things.

three obvious choices (doesn't mean these are the best but just the easiest to think up)

accelerated turning (the longer you turn the faster you turn)
pro: makes seance and doesn't need extra keys
con: hard to turn at a constant rate or if you keep on going when you let go you have to deal with accelerating in the opposite direction

throttled turning (and max speed while you are at it)
pro: Allows you to have very fast or slow turning at a constant rate when you need it
con: Needs several extra keys and some kind of display to use it usefully

several levels of speed (several keys each turning at a different rate)
pro: easy to learn and put in
con: Not very flexible and if you need to turn at a different rate than what the keys have predefined you are out of luck

do you like one of these or do you have a different idea?

throttled turning. It requires a bar. I don't think it would be obtrusive and wouldn't change gameplay if you didn't wish to (or know how to) use it (but why wouldn't you).

Accelerated turning would be more realistic as another pro for it. It would be neat to have an "old maneuvering drive" just to see what it feels like and shouldn't be ruled out.

what about double tap turning ?

pro: tap turns slowly, double tap turns fast
both of them are constant turning
no needs for extra key

con: can be messy when you need to react fast

As turning fast is generally an action which needs to be done quickly, and thus simply, I suggest that a double tap activate a slow turn (should a double tap be used).

An alternate solution is to have a fast and slow modifier key. Hold the fast or slow key in addition to the regular turn key to execute the specified turn - no modifier results in a regular, medium speed turn.

I also like the several levels of speed method - would work well on the numpad (with 7, 4 and 1 being the different "left" speeds) - remember that your laptop does have a numpad it just overlaps some keys.

A modifier key would be ok I guess, but what I really want is to be able to match speed with a freighter, fine tune your turning radius so that you can outmaneuver your opponent with a manageable but optimum turning speed, and then slow it down so you do some long-range bombardment. This requires throttled turning.
