Random boss

One big problem with the late game is that you know exactly what the last boss will be like so you can prepare for it with an exact setup so once you get that setup there seems little point in advancing.

A solution to this is to make the last boss have random equipment with different strengthens (random every time you enter the system). The gate would shut down and not let you out by normal gating or with the jump drive. (to prevent going in and out trying to get the boss that you want)

This would make the final boss much more interesting and allow the end game more interesting due to you don't know if you have good equipment giving more reason to look for new things.

I feel I should point out that on IRC where this came up I suggested that gems of despair would remain an escape. This is why the boss would need to be generated from scratch each time you enter.

It also doesn't just have to be changes in equipment. It could randomly have or not have escorts of one more types as well. A weak command ship with escorts would have a very different charachter than a strong command ship without and would require different tactics and to some degree equipment.

A random iocrym ship is selected when you enter the Heretic system, they have a variety of level 12 weapons, the ship can be faster or slower or the firerate can be different.
The variations are small however or someone could say even "cosmetics".
A number of completely different Iocrym encounters could be interesting:

* a fleet of small ships
* a station with a mission
* THE Iocrym ship
* a labyrinth using arena walls and minefields
* a battle with the Iocrym ship with the system patched with "damaging particles" (like the ones surrounding the gate) preventing the player to simply fly backwards in a straight line at a safe distance.
* using small patches of nebulae to slow down the player and make him re-align the ship.

:D Now this could be interesting...

The fleet will always be there in TX2, but I could vary the composition, size and the Heretic system itself... And the weapons on this ships too... :)
I'll stick around and see what ideas get developed...
