Regarding virtual items

It would be nice if they wouldn't show up in the player ship selection screen. That way, we could include custom virtual items in the ship's default equipment and pass these off as aspects of the ship, since the player would not be able to interact with them in the game. As it is, the only thing that even informs the player of their existence is the fact that they are displayed on the ship's equipment screen when selecting a ship.
Last Cause Of Death: Destroyed by Karl Svalbard's last Lucifer missile, right after I blew him up. And the crowd cheers.

Have you tested that? Looking at the code it looks like virtual items are always excluded.
If you've got a mod that shows the problem, please write up a bug and I can fix it.
[Edit: Sorry, I think I get it now--you're talking about the *ship* selection screen. I thought you meant the item selection screen.]
