Twice in UTF it has been suggested that the good and bad guys fight each other in full-scale war. I like the concept, and wish to expand upon them. First, some things to bear in mind:

1) The fighting should be influnceable by the player
2) The Ares shouldn't wipe out the Commonwealth with ease (nor should anyone else)
3) The player should hear about climatic battles in time to influence them
4) The player should be able to find out about the course of the war
5) Stations should be important
6) Losing every station on one side shouldn't end the war
(If you disagree with one of these, say so)

Here is my proposal. Ships should have limited supplies, and need supply ships or supporting bases for prolonged offensives. The commonwealth should get better ships. Information about large commonwealth forces preparing for offensives, large bases (communes, ciddeils, CSCs ranx fortresses, and so forth) being destroyed, and large fleets coming from the stargates, should be flashed on the bottom of the screen. The ship should have a quick and dirty summery option, and military bases should have more detailed information. To satisfy requirement 6, fleets can emerge from the stargate and operate until supplies run out, but mostly as light raids.

An Ares offensive might go like this: a large fleet comes from stargate XYZ, and a warning flashes along the bottom of the players screen. Commonwealth forces try to force the fleet to go to the communes and refuel by skirmishing and hitting the Poler’s. In the mean time the commonwealth forces assemble at a CSC that may fly with the fleet. the player hears about the fleet assembling, and can go there or assist with the skirmishing if he wants to. A battle is fought between the main fleets with one winner. This may not be decsive. The offense outlined above should happen relatively rarely. Most attacks will be gunship raids.

More on the supplies: every ship will have a supply limit. If the supply amount runs low the ship will refuel at a station or supply ship. Ships with depleteable munitions will have to reload at large stations or supply ships. Each station will supply a variable number of ships other than the garrison. Supplies will decay at a constant rate, faster when using engines, and even faster when shooting. Supply ships will have a limit to total ability to resupply. Attacks can be launched without bases to resupply them, but can only remain in system while their onboard supplies last. Supply ships can refill at large bases. If ships ammo runs out, take a wild guess. If fuel runs out the ship must return to stargate

This would probably be the easiest sort of Ares-CW battle to code due to its not needing a change in the AI. The hardest part to code would probably be suplies. Suplies should simply be fuel and ammo, because fuel and ammo do what is described above for supplies. It would probably be good to introduce a second type of CW ship for balance.
