So, a while back (several versions ago, I think) there was some discussion on the UTF about novelty or 'themed' systems. I thought I would just throw this idea out there again. Please, if you have a fun idea for a system, throw it out there!

A couple such systems that I would like to see:

A nanomachine infested system.

The system is full of leeetle tiny ships. About the size of a recoilless cannon round, or smaller. They hunt in packs. They fire nano-damage weapons, which home in on you. I think this would look really cool, be really hard, and fun to play through. The idea for this came from my fiddling around with little tiny seeking fragments. (see the 'fossaman needs another debug' thread in the shipyard) Some sort of station near the center of the system could be spitting out new nano-fleets every few minutes. These ships would be incredibly easy to destroy...if you can hit them.

That idea might be better suited as version 2.0 material. But the mechanics for implementing something like that are in place now.

An alien derelict system.

Filled with lots of old, abandoned looking alien-type stations. Has turrets and other automated defenses scattered around. Near the entry stargate is a commonwealth research facility, which gives you missions for specific items to go and look for among the debris. They could give you alien weapons as a reward. (note: this is why I was asking about dock-screens as gate-jump initiators. The only way into this system would be through a military checkpoint station)

If someone feels like linking to the old thread on the UTF, feel free...I feel lazy right now. :P I think the biggest ideas from there were black hole systems, supernova remnant systems, a commonwealth proving ground, a university system...I'm sure there were a few others.
X-ray laser! Pew, pew pew!

I think it would be awesome if you could occasionally encounter rogue nanos in regular systems. It would just be a pack of tiny ships that have a super short range 'Melee" weapon. A skilled player could lead them to his enemies, or just get devoured. Shockwave weapons, like micronukes would be the ideal solution, since they hit everything in their blast radius.

I'm sure glad I took my trusty Morningstar cannon with me to Nanoworld!

How about a system with lost aliens from Iocrym space? Just an abandoned ship or a small fleet or something. It'd just hint at what's behind the gate and be a really good teaser that keeps us waiting for the next revision and another clue.

Those sound like some pretty kewl ideas. I especially like the alien derelict system one. Love good missions.

The black hole system sounds like potential for new toys-maybe would need a specific ROM or device to detect it. Could also make the BH gravitational; get too close and you could meet your doom if ya dint have a special device like the jumpdrive.

Was thinking something like a nebula system that, instead of disabling radars, would disable all shields. Could get interesting with spawning pirates.

What about a disoriented-maze system? System could be the remains of the ancients testing grounds for the first gates. One that's full of jumpgates but only two of them goes to another system. One leading back to the previous system, the other to the next. All the rest would just jump you to another gate in the same system and you'd get a message stating "gate test failure 1" or whatever. Imagine using a system map ROM, only to find a huge amount of gates with strange alien symbols!

I just envisioned that faulty gate system and shuddered. that would be plain evil.. especially for people like me that can't remember which gate i already went through...

How about jumping into a system where you find a new race? The race is divided into 4 sanctions, all are friendly with each other but neutral with you.

You meet the first sanction right after jumping into the system ( their station would be close to the gate you just jumped through). Upon docking with their station, you are not allowed to do any business (buy/sell) but you are approached by one of them and they ask you to deliver something to sanction 2 free of charge. You have the option to accept or decline. If you accept, sanction 2 will do the same and ask you to deliver to sanction 3, and 3 to 4... (all missions would have direction indicators to each station like the CW does)
If you decline any offer, all the sanctions will bar you from docking and you just go on your way.
If you've accepted all missions, sanction 4 would ask you to go to yet another station for your reward. Upon docking at this station, all 4 sanctions are there and each ask you to help defend them from some kind of attack. You can only choose 1 of them or decline all.
This would come with a reward and a penalty. If you choose one of them, the others will not allow you to dock at their stations anymore but they'll still remain neutral with you. If you decline, none would allow you to dock.

Upon your acceptance with one of them, you'd be directed back to their station and await the attacker. If you win, you dock and get the reward and that sanction opens up business with you. If you loose (their base gets destroyed) the remaining sanctions will turn enemy and send their ships after you.

As for the reward, one sanction would have a new weapon, another, a new shield, the other, a new set of armor and lastly, a new device - all of which would be beneficial to you in the second half of the game and obviously, you wouldn't know which sanction has what (each of those items would be randomly generated/rotated per sanction every game-play).

For the moment, I think v1.0 could have some branches. I believe there was discussion about a Xenophobe branch mod. Was that ever finished? The Marauders and Ranx might prove interesting ones too.

Quite a while ago (sometime in 2005, before I played), there was some big project to make system branches for the major races, including Ares, Ranx, Xenos, Luminous, and a few others. Each modder was given a race, and they were free to make the system branch.

The project, however, fell apart.
