Actually it is fine in Bugs'n'Brains since it is a functionality that must be implemented by George. It has been requested quite a few times though... don't know if it ever got a ticket on the tracker.

I do think it is a good idea...surely someone could mod it in the mean time?

Actually, it would be very 'hackish' as most orders don't affect the player. You can physically force the player to move but any keyboard input would still be honoured and we can't force the playership to face a particular direction.
So in summary, it IS possible, but it would not be pretty.
