I think it would be really neat if there was a built in media player for the game, one that would play mp3 or .ogg files that the player places in a folder (called Music).

Sounds funny that it hasnt been done already, transcendence can play mp3s. So it just needs a little extra to make it play music in a folder right?

I just get to distracted to put on my own music once the game is running.

There are some mods that do similar things. For example, this and this.

As for me, I usually listen to Internet radio while playing.

One of the problems is that you have to get free music. I tried to get the Rocky theme music to play upon the death of the Iocrym Command Ship, but as alterecco said, there are copyright issues. Currently Trans can play .wav files though. (I think there is a ticket for playing .mp3 files on Trac)

I don't want any sort of copyright on my Transcendence mods. Feel free to take/modify whatever you want.

Music is a bad idea, you will crazy after a few hours, like I when I finished Puzzle Quest . Or if you want maybe "Your own" will be
good, but I think every music like mettalica, scorpions, high school musiccal (and others) are not suitable to this game.
Here you need a theme song, and they are very boring after a long time... thrust me... But it's my opinion. :o

Most of you misunderstand me...

We already have a theme song (see the screen shot at the bottem of the post), and I listen to Rammstein, E nomine, metalica, scorpions, and KMFDM while playing the game. I find KMFDM's Free your hate very fitting when in a firefight, or E nomine's Wolfen (das tier in mir) good for fights too. Heck I listen to Insane Clown possee, eminem, Daddy yankee, akon, Milk and honey, Gorillaz, lady gaga, ... everything pretty much even those weird japanese songs with the little anime girls driving steamrollers over things.

The idea was you could "add on" what ever music songs if you wanted. There is no unwilling music involved here, if you like the silence then you wouldnt put any files in the music folder, if your addicted to the transcendence march then you put that file into the music folder. So unlike Puzzle Quest or similar games you have control over your personal game experience.

I don't see why having music would be a bad thing, unless there is audio part that you have to pay attention to. Currently there are no verbal sounds, nor things like the north/south/west/east puzzles in myst (the musical maze)... so why shouldn't I be able to have music built into the game?
Datal wrote:I think every music like mettalica, scorpions, high school musiccal (and others) are not suitable to this game.

Quite frankly Datal I don't give a ... what you think about the songs I want to listen to. If I wanna listen to aqua's barbie girl on repeat while playing the game that is my own personal preference and are none of your concern.

Also... metallica, musical, and trust are the proper spellings... though after reading the comment I did wanna thrust you out my cargo holds airlock

What are the possible copyright issues of me playing my own personal music collection? Please explain.
RPC wrote:One of the problems is that you have to get free music.
I don't see how this issue is relavent to my original point. The game designer would have to use free music or get permission to use music. I am not the game designer. So why do I have to get free music?
RPC wrote:I tried to get the Rocky theme music to play upon the death of the Iocrym Command Ship
Nice idea for that, did it work? I'd love to be able to supply my own victory song and have play when I kill that thing. Specific battle music would be cool to... maybe I could some of the mp3s of chrono trigger that I have for those...

Sorry but I'll never believe that Trans cannot play an mp3 file. Here is why.

I remember reading on the forums that space is a quiet place, so there aren't much sounds in-game (trying to stick to realism). The weapon sounds are there for gameplay reasons, but you don't hear sounds when the DriveImage is invoked, do you?
LunarAvenger wrote:Sorry but I'll never believe that Trans cannot play an mp3 file. Here is why.
I know that TranscendenceMarch is an .mp3, that's why there is a ticket to play it on Trac-- you can't get an .mp3 to play through Tscript, you have to convert it into a wav or it won't work (I don't know if this was fixed for 1.05).

Like in the 1st post, you wanted it to be in-game. George can't use licensed music freely unless he wants to encounter legal issues.
The other way instead of waiting for George to put in music is to mod it in. Same legal issues apply if you decide to release it on Xelerus.

Ask sdw195 for the code, he's the one who did it.

Let me rephrase... I am asking for the "means" to an "end". The "end" is illegal for you to give me. But the "means" is legal. Then it is my problem to deal with and not yours. For example you could not legally give me drugs, but if I only needed a car to go and get them you could give me the car, then it would be my problem how I use the car. (replace drugs with music, replace car with media player, see?)

Where I get the music is my own problem. I could download an illegal mp3 or I could use a song I made myself. In the end not your problem. Include a little note in the End User Agreement that the staff can in no way be held accountable if you use their program to play any illegal music files.

And yet I hear when my bullets hit a station or when a ship explodes. Or when they hit my shields... how would I hear impact on an energy field around my ship with nothing inbetween me and it? When I get hit it makes sense or when my drives engage I would hear it through the bulkheads... being able to hear myself shoot as well. But enemies? If you made it like outer space then there would extremely few sounds left. I am sure realism is plenty bruised already that having a media player in my cockpit would actually make perfect sense... who wants to travel through space with pure silence alone on a ship??

I didn't know that. I am new to the whole game design thing, I mostly deal with paper (D&D) so I simply saw an mp3 file and knew it was being played somehow. This changes nothing though the game can obviously convert an mp3 into a wav to play it...

I am not George. I am not asking for free music. I am not asking for music to be included in the game, I am asking for the ability to play music while playing.

I didn't and still am not asking for this.

And those are? I just looked for copyright issues dealing with media players and found none, I did find a bunch of free media players. for example VideoLan Client (VLC Media player).

The problems with giving away music are well understood. Which is why I haven't been asking for that.

If you're playing Transcendence you're running either Windows or Linux. If you're running a current version it's Windows or Linux via WINE. I suppose it may be possible to run WINE on OSX as well. I'm not a Mac user to know.

Every single OS that supports Transcendence except possibly Windows 98 also supports multitasking and comes with an MP3 player. Every single one. Start whatever media player you have. Start a playlist. Start Transcendence. You now have Transcendence with music. You're welcome.

Yes this post is useful. Good for people with good strong computers that can handle that. But there are people who can barely play youtube videos on their computer, yet this game runs smoothly even with the intro playing.

Meh, someone close the thread, an internet forum is not the place for ideas.

We're all for hearing ideas. But if an idea can not work for a certain reason, wouldn't you prefer to know what it is? And either way, a debate is an excellent format to present ideas and explore them fully.

I have to ask -- you say about "good strong computers" that could handle two tasks at once - media player and Transcendence. Almost all post 95/98 (the year) computers have an OS capable of multiple tasks. Playing music from Windows Media Player or a similar program and Transcendence is a simple enough task and I truly feel sorry for people in a situation where that is not possible, however it is extremely unlikely.

You complain that a forum is not a place for ideas -- just because someone doesn't agree with your viewpoint doesn't make it a bad thread. this is actually a good thread - it raises the issues of Music Licensing and the effects that has in indie developers. It also helps George - he might now think about including music in the game, through whatever means he feels neccessary.

Off topic - LunarAvenger, what is in your signature? I don't know Latin (if that's what it is).

I have been trying to use a computer that has been slowly dindling away to nothingness. I can play youtube videos if they are set to 240p, yet somehow this amazing game will play without a hiccup, without errors, without my computer throwing a fit and blue.screen.of.deathing me. So yes I am a little frustrated when people go off talking about things like how -most- computers dont have this problem, how most computers can simply multitask...

eventually it would be nice if the in-game music player I suggested would be able to trigger to boss music when the quarintine is dropped ... or victory music when it is killed... or ... need a list?

*boss fight
*boss death
*enter heretic
*enter point juno
*first system music unique
*on a mission (different music depending who your doing it for...)
*defending or attacking missions...

So yea, sorry if I am coming off as pissed off but I just really thought these ideas would be cool. But all I hear are why it shouldnt, couldnt, or wont work. The original posts intent is simply asking for this to be placed into the game, glad it is useful but the discussion of copyrights, or how 98% of the world can just brutally put music overtop of the game isnt what I was going for.

*sigh* The original intent is: A way to have dynamic music built into the game. But I was going to start with the more simple idea of just have music in the game. I figured once music was in the game I would suggest that it be dynamic, that it react to what the player does. Like I said before there is nothing like having the a high energy song start playing the moment you start going after dwarg swarm or ferian nest.

And yes that is latin, it does translate resonably in google translate, I made it for domina, I am guessing at a more sinister outcome to the whole plot.

Computers don't slowly dwindle away into nothing unless malware or dust buildup is involved. Clean up the root of the problem and the symptoms will clear up on their own. Unless the computer has never worked well a proper cleaning of the computer will fix most problems.

You can get compressed air at your local computer store and can probably get advice on how to go about cleaning up malware here if you post the specifics of your OS and what you have installed on it.
