battle damage

For the next version there will be a tag that allows your devices to be damaged when you get hit when your shield is down. This could easily be made to apply to most devices. If there is a way to tell when something gets damaged you could even have the cargo hold when damaged dump some of your loose items.

(I am not sure I am a fan of this idea sence armor is already weak but just putting it out there)

If you're gonna have your items get damaged in battle then you need to have a reasonable way of repairing them. Otherwise, it unbalances the game.

or at least more places to equip stuff. Limited device life span is an interesting idea let me think about it more.

Well, another alternative would be to have stuff more easily accessable... (that doesn't look right, how do you spell that :P).
Seeing how long it takes in some games to get certain devises and then this thing breaks and your left wanting - that's just frustrating. And realism is fine, but it's a game and it should be more fun than anything else, in my opinion.
So implement a utilities dealer, that provides your with the replacements for the breakable stuff. Don't need to be 5 or so in the game, just 1-2. If you need something replaced - just head back to him.

stuff is just sitting around just waiting for you to take it but most of the time you just sell it. Thats why I said we need more places to equip stuff.
