Just thought of this for my other topic. With looting and pirates so common self destructing cargo holds would be an important thing to have so not to let important equipment and info to the enemy. I believe that they scuttled ships in real life (could someone confirm this) to prevent such things.
This would help alot in the excess credit problem (the more expensive things are more likely to be protected in this way)

I think there are better ways of preventing excessive looting. The first that comes to mind is simply to provide other sources of income, such as cargo runs. Docking with a wreck and having it explode and potentially damage your ship would be pretty irritating.
That'd be really painful. Maybe you could put this system only on technologically advanced factions like the commonwealth as they'd be the ones who'd be worried about stolen tech. Also, this would prevent killing corporate cruisers for the equipment.
