Now, I've begun to mod something like this, but...

Anyways, why not do multiple versions of each ship with different armor/weapons/shields? Just a name and description change away (and a few new entities).

What think?

I said I was perfectly insane.

Why not let the player choose their loadout when they select the ship instead of cluttering the menu with many different versions of the same ship?

Each ship would have a menu for shield, armor and weapon loadouts, where the player gets to choose between two or three starting items. Each ship has different choices, for example:

Sapphire: recoiless or dual laser
Wolfen: dual laser + NAMI or dual recoilless or laser array
Freighter: no choice, just omnilaser

interesting idea but I would expand on it. Like a better shield for no weapon.
Starting with a better reactor but no shield.
Crying is not a proper retort!

Or perhaps go a little further with a level option at game start.
For example;
Normal level: all 3 playerships rigged as they currently are.
Easy level: all 3 playerships rigged with a slightly better weapon, armor and shield than the normal level. Great for newbies starting out.
Hard level: all 3 playerships rigged with light titanium armor, no weapon or shield but a slight increase of starting funds. Player would have to rely on buying and having installed what is available at Starton station. (Borrowed this level idea from Dvlenk6's Molotok Smuggler mod) It's a great setup for the more experienced player.

If you want us to be able to build the perfect starter ship from scratch just give us a few bucks and a "shopping" dialog and we can pick our own loadout, governed by the limit of our starting funds.

The most replayable part of the game is the beginning, though, precisely because you never know exactly how you're going to have to play your opening moves.

Once you find 2 gems of despair and a couple of system map ROM's you can basically make your ship to order.

making this kind of "easy" "normal" "medium" "hard" "insane" mod would be easy. Furthermore, it could also effect max devices, cargo hold space, etc.
