so it would seem that almost all very large ships do not have shields. perhaps it is because they are too big, or that they rely on other means of defense like small fighters, missile defense device, patch spiders etc. Maybe George thought if these ships had shields they would be too hard to kill.
Perhaps the science behind a shield is that it MUST form a complete and perfect sphere (no emitters) and thus you may only have one shield generator active and it must be a flawless sphere around the ship?
The Iocrym have obviously found a way to make a larger shield, perhaps humanity just dosn't have the technology yet?

The masses listed in there actually have very little in-game effect, other than to help change the movement physics in conjunction with recoil, momentum, and engine power.

Also, you can have a super-dense ship (ie, ranx dreadnough) that is smaller than a bigger ship (ie, phobos).

Furthermore, I think that that list is just the actual "mass" attribute for the ship itself- to provide a more accurate comparison, you need to add in the mass of the ship's armor as well (and weapons too, but only on the smaller ships)
