It would be nice for the communication system to be expanded. Here are a few ideas.
general hailing: finds a random friendly station and maps it.
pricelist: asking what you can buy from there.
help: asking friendly stations to help you fight off some ships if they are close enough
help(fuel): call a refueling ship from a fuel station or commonwealth station
These could be made available through missions or just in general making certain types of stations like you more.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Crying is not a proper retort!
Most of this could be done like autons (press "comm" button, select ship, select message), but if it is ever implemented in earnest I think it warrants it's own screen that you can pull up (slowing time down just like in the cargo screen) and select targets and messages.
A long time ago when we were talking about the HUD I suggested amongst other things that bad guys use communications too, to request reinforcements or report your prescence, and if you have a more robust communications system you can intercept communications (if you were between the sender and reciever) or jam them (you will need the right gear to jam or unencrypt intercepted messages - probably a Quantum CPU, which would make it more useful).
Some ideas for message options:
Surrender: You tell an enemy ship (or group of ships) that you will give them all your cargo and credits if they let you escape with your ship. Occasionally effective against pirates, not so much on Penitents.
Pirate: you tell a friendly to give you all their cargo. Obviously illegal, and a good chance they won't go down without a fight (would require a more indepth crime/relations system)
Small talk: you ask friendlies where they're headed or what they are carrying. Useful in that if they are headed somewhere you are going you can follow them and if they are carrying something you want you can take it from them.

There is. The car mod.Xephyr wrote:How about an OnStar like thing? like you could get them to send a corporate cruiser or something to get you out of trouble, or give you co-ordinates to the nearest station of a certain type.

Its OnSquare

BTW: I would lvoe an expanded Communications system, have ememies friendies, talk to you? Not all on the screen scrooler like thing that is what happens now. But like a little comm box. More like the dock screens? half half? (Sorry I'm used to this from my GPS .
