The shipping company is all well and good, and looking for guards... but what if you're running a freighter. Shouldn't it be possible to play through a Korolov storyline from the other side of the equation, BEING guarded instead of offering your services AS a guard?

Better yet, you should be able to offer your services in transporting goods.

Possibly I did not articulate this idea well enough, but that is EXACTLY what I was implying.

Shipping missions could include both in-system and out-system transfers. The easy missions would provide you with guards... the harder ones would not.

I meant why have guards at all? Since Korolov seems to be short-staffed for fighters, it seems more likely that you would be asked to make deliveries without any assistance since you are well armed already.

I'm liking this idea more and more.

You're billy badass of the armored brigade and have protected Korlov fighters time and again, presumably helping them make a ton of credits and stay in business. But this time, the cargo is too precious to send with a freighter. No, they need a sleek, fast, powerful warship to get this stuff through. And it MUST go through.

That's not the only option tho. I had this idea mainly in reference to the one-and-only path through the game... in other games it would be called the warrior path. Theres some side quests that skirt this tendency but overall it's kill-or-be-killed. Especially for the early game, there should be alternatives.

You have mining, but nobody ever gives you a mining "quest" except killing people. Theres trading, but nobody ever gives you a trading "quest" except killing pirates that want to kill your people. The Black Market is probably the closest thing to an alternative, and... quite honestly, they never kill people, even tho there should probably be some kind of quests of this nature when you're an Enforcer. You're probably not the only one in the universe that could owe the Black Market money.

"Ok, we've got something different this time. A few weeks ago there was an accident at the mining colony at the other end of the sector. Their entire stockpile of explosives detonated. No one died, amazingly, but they need replacements immediately, or they're going to have to shut down operations. We want you to take 40 tons of hexagene and 10 crates of detonators to the mines. Obviously, this sort of cargo is likely to attract the charon pirates, so be careful out there!"

...and hexagene and detonators as commodities could be a neat little way to get more stuff from the tinkers (KM550s or 500s, maybe 120s?)

Oo-hoooo... Volatile cargo, eh? Sounds dangerous.

Count me in.

(cause I'm a bit crazy like that)

Having it as an instakill if things go wrong would be excessive. But making you wreck have, say....Thermoexplosion4 on death...would be fun.

How about this. You get two options on dangerous missions. You can choose to go with no escorts or you can choose to bring escorts for a reduced award (in case you don't have enough upgrades yet to survive on your own).

In true lawyer style, the cost of the escorts should be deducted from your pay after the delivery is all said and done.

"Heres your 10,000 credits, job well done. Now theres just the matter of escort fees <yoink>, laywer fees <yoink>, delivery insurance <yoink>, non-delivery insurance <yoink>, liability insurance <yoink>, insurance insurance <yoink>.... and here you go.

You gain 200 credits"

This is good, but I thought Korvlov was just an escort company, not an actual shipping company. They work for the shipping companies, assuming there are shipping companies. It might be that all freighters are independents (you can make a pretty tidy profit if you happen to find an ice farm and a hotel in the same system).
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad
