I've been thinking recently about Dvalin. At present, he's not that much use.

So..how can he be made better?

Ideas I've had (these don't all go together):

1. Buff Dvalin Armor to a standard closer to P250 hexphase
2. Redo the way he works in the following way:
-Dvalin Still accepts exotic items
-He also gives hints/co-ords if there's a station in the system (or 2 or so systems on either side of the system he's in) that have things he wants and doesn't have, either as things on the guards (EG. Sung Armor), or things on/in the station.
-Presumably Rassiemeser would have people out looking for these things and testing new weapons. Possibly finding wrecks with a "Shattered Weapon prototype" or similar on board (not a usable weapon, just a ruined shell of one), or a freighter with a data rom of weapon/armor research results... at his request would be a mission that would turn up every 2-4 items that are given? The wrecks would be either in deep space somewhere, or close to a random living enemy station.

3. Make it easier to get the Ion9.

Any other ideas?

The idea is its supposed to be difficult, but I admit its quite difficult to get the items. But its worth it if you want. otherwise you can ship it which is what I usually do.

By the time he shows up I almost always already have better armor, and I never did find enough stuff to get the ion9 when I tried to (way back in .99 I think), so I usually just skip.

Exactly,. THe difficulty is fine..but NOT for a little bit or ceralloy, some obsolete armor and a gun that's virtually impossible to get. Making it easy is not the aim..making the rewards proportional, or toning down the grindfest required...Is.

The Ion9 takes 1200 points. If you deliver nothing but intact stuff Dvalin will take a maximum of 5 for, I think itemlevel*18 points.

The items must be notforsale and rare or veryrare or notrandom.

I think it's mathematically impossible to get the Ion9 giving Dvalin all valid items before getting into Ares capital ships. At that point you can be selling the stuff Dvalin would accept to the teratons instead and buy a nice level 9 or 10 weapon in the rin economy.

1200 points seems a bit high, 1000 or so might be better.

I think it should give more points for particularly special points like the qianlong. That would make the qianlong good for something as well.

Maybe make it (max 0 (multiply 18 (square (subtract level 3))))?

Set up a system for valuing:

If item is Rare, add a bonus.

If Item is VeryRare, add a bigger bonus

If item is NotRandom, give an extremely generous bonus and don't care about double-ups (means that Dragon Armor also becomes more useful)

Value is also possibly modifed by:

Damage
Damage type
Fire rate
other weapony stuff ;)

Level would matter too.

Yup. it could get fairly complex, but hey, Dvalin is a genius, and he's working on specific projects....so certain things would be far more interesting than other things that on paper are bigger and better.

I did a search for every item Dvalin could accept. In theory, if the player can find five intact items of everything rare or veryrare that is level VI or under, the player can barely get enough XP for the Ion9 cannon. In practice, this does not happen. It is difficult enough to find the items in the first place, much less intact. Trying to spawn such lower level weapons via the Teraton fabricator is a waste of resources that are better spent on getting level IX or X equipment in the first place. The only time I could get the Ion9 cannon is when I donated several high level items including (but not limited to) Ares Plasma Archcannon, Ferian Plasma Cannon, and anything made by the Iocrym. All of that just for an inferior ion version of the Ferian Plasma Cannon. What a rip-off! I would rather sell the hardware Dvalin wants to the Teratons for rin, then buy the stuff I really want.

Curiously, Dvalin will accept the Class V deflector the player gets from Korolov. (I did not know Dvalin was a Commonwealth antique collector.) Actually, the class V is so useful and powerful for its level it should lose its notforsale tag and maybe upgrade rarity to veryrare.

The only thing useful from Dvalin is the enhanced Akan600. (His armor is useful as fabricator fodder though.) There were one or two games where I had a lousy omni weapon, and the Akan600 was the next upgrade I could get. Ranx gunships appear about the same time as Dvalin, so ammo is not a problem then.

Even the Akan has its downsides. But the armor and the ion9 are truly terrible for the difficulty in getting them.

Yes, the Akan600 is not the best weapon, but at least it can kill stuff; and the enhanced one given by Dvalin is not too hard to get. The only game I used it in, I did not find any omnidirectional weapon stronger than an omnidirectional laser cannon or particle beam by the time I met Dvalin. The Akan600 is no omnidirectional Tev9 or Ares lightning turret; but when the RNG is cruel, you take what you can get.

Both armor gifts stink. At least you can donate a few otherwise useless notforsale junk weapons and feed the first armor gift to the fabricator.

The Ion9 is a pale imitation of the Ferian Plasma Cannon. I would rather farm Ferian warriors until I get the real thing.
