There's currently a way to get around having military (and illegal) equipment taken away from you while not having an identification chip when docked at a Commonwealth station. I (and after some searching, http://neurohack.com/transcendence/foru ... 6353#26353, at least one other person) found that if you already have the equipment installed on your ship, then you'll get to keep them when docked, with no penalties whatsoever for having items you're not technically allowed to have, though stuff in the cargo hold will still be removed. If your ship is armed with illegal weapons, or military equipment without a chip; unless this all was designed to be a feature (as in all fairness it would be pointless having illegal weapons installed if they were taken away no matter what), wouldn't it be better if your ship had the equipment removed, and/or depending on the amount you have installed, you either get heavily fined or even arrested for having the equipment? (I also think that if might be a good idea if you got fined or arrested even if you just have a lot of illegal or unlicensed military weapons in your cargo hold and you get caught, rather than it just getting confiscated without any other penalty, though I haven't experimented with this enough to see if this already happens.)
For disclosure, other than the link I provided above, I haven't found any other discussion in this forum that is about this topic. In addition, I'm using version 1.01, so I don't know if anything I mentioned above is already in upcoming versions. I apologize in advance if this all has already been discussed and resolved, and I missed it,

This bugs me too. (To yacht: You saved me the trouble of writing about this.)
Another thing, that is a bit funny, is when you want to install or remove forbidden devices, they can clearly see your contraband, but just do nothing except maybe say "We do not install...". Also, if you have a smugglers hold installed, then remove it at a Commonwealth station, customs will confiscate it as you leave the screen. That part makes sense. What does not make sense is they do nothing if after they see your installed smugglers hold or waste cannon, they do nothing if you do not remove it from your ship.
A quick glance at the xml files indicates that confiscation is all they do.

This is known, but intentional for all I can tell, and it's fine really, given that the device is already incorporated into your ship and they only seem care about trade of the item (if its in your cargo hold), as nobody trades items physically attached to the ship. (unless they were selling the whole ship)

Sounds like an acceptable break from reality.
Still, the Commonwealth should bust you if they confiscate too much contraband from your ship. By too much, I mean above an arbitrary credit threshold. They are known to bust you if you are caught with a black market container, which is worth 50000 credits to the black market.

Well, some people will unwittingly buy military grade item without an id, and then get it confiscated /and/ busted? that's ... too much. It would have to trigger /only/ on illegals being confiscated. Excluding slave coffins too.
