Right now the game defaults to the Sapphire. But is that really the starting class for a newbie player?

I'm thinking of changing the default to either the freighter or the Wolfen. Which do you all believe would be easier for a novice player?

I prefer the Wolfen, but that might be because I prefer a more agressive approach, ie shoot first, don't ask questions. Also, I've been playing the game for a while, so it comes naturally to me by now.

If I were to be objective, I might think that the freighter would make the best newbie choice, since it has a greater survivability in the early game. Not really sure though, since I've only played one game with it.

Yeah, i'd say the freighter would be the best for a beginner.

I'd say freighter. The omni to start is really a big advantage.

I would say the wolfen, if you decide to change it. It's the easiest ship to use at the beginning of the game, and is more likely to teach new players how to fly, maneuver, and dogfight effectively. I think if you start out with an omni-weapon, you're going to get a lot more 'omni-weapon only' players.

That said, I think the sapphire is a good, happy medium between the two ships, and it's perfectly possible to win with any of the three.

Yep, the freighter. Simply for the fact that it does have a more manageable weapon for beginners.
When I tried this game for the very first time, I tested each ship out only in Eridana to get a feel for each one. After which, I knew which ship would be my first choice to run through and learn the game--the freighter. It being equipped with the omni laser, huge cargo hold and supports more equipment has newbie written all over it.
The Sapphire was just plain too hard for me to get used to as a newbie. But it did present itself as a challenge for later on, after getting a feel for the game. It being equipped with a weak and slow weapon made learning the game difficult--which pointed me back to the freighter's ease of useage while learning. The Wolfen was the "Wow!" ship in that it was quick and squirrely and shot double barrels, but overall it felt too ackward and hard to manage, my being new to the game.

Personally, I don't think that the starting ship with an omni weapon will manifest omni-only players, since it's inevitable that the beginner will end up using an omni weapon at one point or another anyway. It's really a matter of personal choice there, as some prefer only omni while others prefer single or dual straight shooters. And then there's those who like using a combination of both.

Wolfen Gunship, the maneuverability of this ship will teach new players to dogfight. The Sapphire Yacht might be a better as it is not so "squirrelly" as FAD put it. The Wolfen kind of slows down later in the game to the Sapphire Yacht's maneuverability level. The freighter may survive a few systems better, but after Rigel I don't think the freighter is quite as good as the Wolfen.

Maybe just make it so, that in the first game you play (and only the first), you get a special "noob" ship? Good at everything, exceptional at nothing? IE, almost as much cargo as the freighter, almost as fast as the Wolfen, yadayada, you get my drift, right?

Yeah, that seems pretty good... how about a full-blown tutorial level? (Level 0 system)
For the first time you press "New Game", there's a popup that says something like: "This is the first time you have played. Would you like to go through the tutorial? Yes/No".

as long as it isn't "compulsory", I'm all for a tutorial level

Having a tutorial level is an excellent idea and I as well agree that there should be one. But in keeping with the topic at hand, so far we have 5 for the freighter and 2 for the Wolfen. (that's including Boris' objective choice for the freighter)

I think the Wolfen is the best ship for newbies, because of it's speed and manuverability. But it can't handle some sweet high-level armors because they're too heavy, and can't handle many non-weapon devices.
Overall, the freighter is greatest.

Oops, looks like this is turning into a Wolfen vs. Freighter thing.

George, I personally think that when you change the default starting ship, you should add (is their one already?) a modding command to set a different ship to be the default, overriding the default and configurable to each user's taste.

And I like the tutoral level idea, but I agree with EvilBob -- it should not be compulsory.

you are right dosgamer. What is funny as well is that the Wolfen and Freighter people are saying the same thing: that the other ship is probably of more use to newbies but that ultimately their ship is better.

EI500 - Sappire - Wolfen. That's the alphabetical order!
Well, probably I have failed to recognize the problem, but what problem anyway?
I'm sure that even newbies are able to find how to choose their ships, so I don't think it important.

Still, Sapphire, I think, is the weakest ship of the three in 0.97a. If it's good or bad I don't know.
