Both devices can the really helpful, especially when you cant dodge or evade missiles, mags, or projectiles.
However in the later game either one of them get me killed almost as often as they probably saved me.
If I dont forget to do so, I disable these devices when docking at a station. If not they will most likely fire at the station when enemies approach and try to fire at me.
Now my question is: Should these devices check for a clear line of fire - I think there is a function to do so, but dont remember the name - so friendlies are not in the way.

In order for the defenses to NOT be a problem, currently you have to Disable them around Friendlies : Idealistically giving them a Sovereign and a nofriendlyfire would be nice.....but that has it's own draw backs : Corporate, Commonwealth and Independents, while friendly are not the same sides. there is no universal friendly in the game that would make the devices less problematic to the main friendly factions.CFG wrote:Both devices can the really helpful, especially when you cant dodge or evade missiles, mags, or projectiles.

the devices react to " missiles " which includes debris from Asteroids, ship and station explosions. to alter the devices ability to react simply because it it is doing it's job would basically make it useless.
Last night I went into STK and after doing the missions armed my plasma torch and went mining around the asteroids ( as well as hunting station and ships to kill while I was out that way : the Plasma Torch is rather powerful , great tool , good weapon , but my main weapon was not so awesome when after I killed a Pirate station I met not one.......but 3 Frigates with escorts, I had to double check the system because for a minute I thought I was in Charon the way I was being attacked.
Anyway : my ship had the Longreach, a Mammoth 25, Howitzer 3 and plasma torch... for the levels of Charon and STK that stuff is pretty hard hitting, but without the Longreach on my Freighter I doubt I would have survived the Pirate frigates and fighting in the asteroids due to the Corsair II being a highly present Hostile for me last night ( unless it was the game beating on me for having the devices I was carrying )
Flying Irresponsibly In Eridani......
I don't like to kill pirates in cold blood ..I do it.. but I don't like it..

Could an "overfaction" of friendly factions be made (the Huari would count until you kill one, perhaps?) that encompasses all the friendly type of factions for the purpose of ICX and them, just to disable friendly fire for automated systems?
My thoughts did go more in the direction: Does syscalcfiresolution check for stuff thats in the way? Should it? Is it actually used for any of these devices? Is there a function does does it and what would be the consequences if the behavior would be modified.
Im not a great modder, but if there is a function that does the stuff this way, I could just overwrite one or both devices.
Some background: I "found" an old savegame where I died on top a ringers station in the Kunlun system - not sure how many systems I already cleared. I had pretty good equipment, like an 1GW reactor, an omni io blaster and a fusionfire howitzer on my freighter, also a mammoth 50, I think. Im not sure - its been a while - but probably something was approaching me, the longreach in this case hit the station a few times too often resulting in the ringers getting annoyed and blow me to pieces
I think its just annoying to "loose" (was attempting a permadeath game) a game just because of stuff like that.
