Having the ability to temporarily boost ship speed at a risk of overloading the reactor.

So for example the stock EI500's speed is 18, and while cruising along you happen upon a Charon frigate who is bent on bringing you down at all costs. Your ole freighter is not gonna outrun that beast, and will be easily chewed up if there's no safe harbor in sight.
So what about a [shift] + [up arrow] and you gain +5 in speed, but while you're emergency thrusting there's a bar graph that's increasing, slowly turning red as it increases...if it maxes out...*BOOM* goes the reactor! And providing ya didn't blow the reactor, having a lengthy cool-down time that will prevent another boost until all is settled down.

This could be a standard built-in-the-reactor feature or perhaps through an upgrade to an installed reactor (not the +20% enhancement) done at a shipyard.

As with most real engines, there's a safety limit (like the tachometer/redline) and so we could assume the ships given speed setting is that safety limit, while there's still a reserve to push it a bit harder, at the risk stated above.

Doable?

Or just make it consumes a whole lot of fuel, EV style.

Not a good idea given how physics work in Transcendence. Ship velocity does not change until player thrusts, docks, or plows through nebula. After player thrusts to maximum speed, he can coast, barring inertialess drive.

Your BEST defense in this Universe is Domina , You have awhile before you meet up with a "Frigate Bent on Eating You" ,
Your best option to protect your ship and cargo is to visit the Sisters, seek out Gems that are a fitting Tribute to Domina, AND, last but not least, Donations are always appreciated by the sisters - so long as it is not an illegal item.

Domina can protect your ship , even from the biggest of the Baddies : If you are willing to answer the Call , you must also be willing to give up your selfishness and work with the sisters, your no good to Domina laying in a wrecked ship.

Most donations do nothing.

Also, Domina is evil. Decrypt the Iocrym AI some time and ask the following questions.
"Why have the Iocrym quarantined us?"
"What does 'eliminate' mean?"
"Why is Domina calling me to the Core?"

The Iocrym AI is the only source outside Domina. If Domina can lie (or some other core mind can lie and one of those lies is its identity as Domina) the only thing we know about Domina is the AI's answer to that third question.

.......Ye of Little Faith... Why has Oracus gotten to our most Esteemed Leader ?

You are correct that "most" donations are nothing in the Great Picture, but they are enough to invoke Domina to save you OnDestroyCheck.

It is True, it WAS Domina's Idea to Cleanse the Galaxies. But it does not mean she is Evil.
The Legions of Oracus must begin with the weakest point of Infiltration : Humans.

So long as Domina can Call and collect Her Legions BEFORE Oracus can , Then the Iocrym can continue to " Protect the galaxy " And Humankind will endure beyond that point.

However, Failure to reach Gamma Crucis and stop the War (by winning it as quickly as possible with all forces ) before it forces the Iocrym to cause the Core Collapse, then we have a problem...

Please stop roleplaying, and please check your advice.

A very small selection of items, almost exclusively soul containers, effect your Domina XP. The vast majority only effect your reputation with the Sisters, which is nearly useless. Even that is not "everything but illegals," only food, fuel, medicine, luxuries, and cash cards and the few things Domina cares about actually effect your reputation.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!

Back on topic.......this may be a useful thing for some ships. The manticore, for example, could certainly use a boost function for running away. There is probably a way to deal with the ship staying past the max speed once it's used its full boost.

That said, there's certainly some room for problems with it, which could use some discussion.

One possible option is to keep "overcharge" and other special functions as an alternative to Domina powers for non-pilgrim PCs. While Stars of the Pilgrim explicitly has the player be bestowed with amazing abilities, other adventures may not, since not everyone in the setting is a pilgrim. Having specialised options such as overclocking the engine, diverting more power to weapons or shields, or disabling ssurge protectors to electrocute pteravores or short-out a cyberattack would be very handy equivalent abilities. They wouldn't be equal....they'd have risks and downsides, such as equipment damage, power surges, ionisation and the like.....but they'd be handy in a pinch, and with the possibility of player actions making them safer/more effective/whatever.

But it COULD help the Pilot with the original question in the mean-time while they wait for a more in-depth coded project to come up.

the Thrusters can assist the player with Missle Avoidance ( in theory ) , so it could be a "start" to giving the player the edge they need against the Frigates until the AfterBurner ideas are sorted out.

Atarlost is RIGHT. ( <----see I said it )

So Maybe the way we are seeing things is different.....

In MY plays when I first started I never knew of all these things : I just unloaded on the sisters, basically :)
I would donate things that I thought missionaries would use, plus the prayer stones when I had them.

However, Domina saved my ship against the Iocrym regardless of my knowing exactly what she wanted best.

Past early game, I exploit the Sisters if they are in the system, and my ship needs their dock services (e.g., Hyperion needs fuel badly). Trading a few hundred credits worth of consumables for thousands of credits worth of services is a steal.

The power that saves you without intervention is called "Desperate Escape." It duplicates "Sanctuary," which all pilgrims start with and which does not scale with relationship levels.

If it ever triggers you have screwed up. You can trigger Sanctuary manually without ever even docking at an abbey. If you're not doing a no powers run you should do so before your ship is going to be destroyed. If you need a safety net the first hit of Insurance is pretty cheap by the time you can get enough soul containers, prayer gems, and halo gems to get Desperate Escape.

Most of the time I like Desperate Escape, because it means I can fight to the very end like a real warrior, without the deadening risk of death.

ps. Also, Desperate Escape has a shorter duration than Sustain, so beware. I've been shot in the rear to death when I thought I'm invincible, many times.

Yes, Desperate Escape is great. It is legalized godmode. Once I get it, honoring permadeath conduct is trivial. If it activates, I have plenty of time to use an escape item or use Sustain and/or Defend (while I flee from whatever triggered Desperate Escape). Afterwards, I wait until the power recharges.

On the contrary, additional thrust is achievable through installed thrusters; disable the thruster and thrust to ship's original max speed, then while coasting at top speed, re-enable the thruster and ya get the extra speed boost. Or use the momentum of howitzers as well.
Certainly it could be coded to do that very same thing while risking reactor damage and/or as sun1404
suggested, to consume massive amounts of fuel, no?

Code: Select all

			maxSpeed=			"15"

			emergencySpeed=			"20"
The concept behind this idea was to put more realism into the playership's mechanics, and not so much as to negate any other similar features. There's no real risks when using Domina's powers, whereas this feature one could risk losing their installed reactor or quickly burning up fuel...or both, if being careless.

And given any space bearing shows/movies, no ship ever runs at top maximum speed at all times. There's a safety margin for certain speed limits while allowing a little for short boosts when necessary.
Same applies in the real world with sea bearing vessels not always running at top speed all the time, as by doing so would risk engine damage.

My point was that the player can shut off engines as soon as he reaches maximum velocity then coast away from danger, unless inside nebula. In Transcendence, there is no friction in space (except inside nebula) to decelerate ships. It takes less than a second for standard playerships to achieve maximum speed.
