Well, it should be like that in reality, and it should be possible to boost a vessel's speed beyond the normal limit too.
Yes, look at my avatar, I have a wyvera type ship.

Think of the possibilities if we had this feature. It wouldn't always be needed for emergency retreats, there's other situations where it could come in handy. Catching up to a ship you're escorting. Trying to make it to a station that's being threatened, or even getting to some place as fast as possible for whatever reason. And there's still that risk of burning up additional fuel or blowing the reactor all the while it's in use, if pushed too hard.

Currently all we can do is up arrow and go, that's basically it. It's as if our ships are governed like a carburator on a minibike, in that its set speed is all we'll be able to achieve no matter how hard we twist that throttle. I think this feature would add a little more excitement into piloting the ship. It could also add that much more responsibilities of our own actions as a pilot.

I would also like to make a correction in my OP; Can't use [shift] key as that's set for missiles, but there's other keys that could be used in conjunction with the up arrow to gain the temporary speed burst. As well, once those keys are released the ship should also return back to normal top speed.

This sounds suspiciously like afterburners in current military jet engines (well in Transcendence it looks like you're always on afterburners). Useful for brief periods, but any longer and you'll definitely destroy the engine.

I think it's a good idea; possibly as an additional device, an "engine booster", which could provide 50% more thrust for a few seconds, complete with an engine temperature bar like the Advanced Tritium Cannon; if it fills up, your ship explodes.

Eh, damage the device the first time, which make the bar fill up faster and work less efficiently.

Overload a damaged drive and you should explode. Make it a little fairer to people first using it.
