I've been playing since v1.08 (or somewhere around there) and the autopilot has been loaded before game start since that version and possibly before.
Possibly a different ROM could be substituted for it these days. Unless the autopilot ROM has other uses that I haven't found, it's only value is the 45 credits you get when you sell it.
Get rid of the autopilot ROM?

Ships came with an autopilot since the first public release of the game.
I think the autopilot ROM is intentionally useless.

It’s actually possible to create a playership that doesn’t start with an autopilot.

They're decent fluff items. I'd like for there to be some ROMs in categories other than 'completely useless', 'useful only once, as an interface improvement', and 'boosts the stats of an equipped item'.
Something like a ROM that changes the AI settings of equipped autons, sets the ship to 'low power mode' where devices are less powerful but draw less power, gets rid of EMP, or temporarily boosts the output of an item at the cost of increased power use.
