It is in this case a complete and perfect overlap, which is actually quite impressive.
This arises because there isn't a minimum separation between the stations in the cluster (or if there is, it isn't working). It's actually possible to kill both stations anyway (as evidenced by the fact that I did so), but it's mildly confusing when you get a big explosion.....and the station appears to stay alive.
(I swear, every time I try playing through a vanilla permadeath game, I find some new and exciting new bug.)
