OK- I'm trying to become a fleet captain to get lamplighter. Now, the ONLY mission that seems to appear is the attack and destroy unknown enemy mission. And the enemy alwayse seems to be a phobos. Now, I can kill the phobos one on one (my mammoth 100 has the ion-reflect power) but in order to pass the mission, you can't lose you wingmen. Now, unlike drones, you can't tell your wingmen to stay behind. So in the end, i end up with them all dead, killed by:
a) the hundreds of deflected ion bolts off my shields
b) the phobos killed them
c) they got hit in the crossfire
----------------------------------------
<nevermind- i found out you get XP even if they all die- just not as much>
The Phobos mission
Lol. I was going to recommend you send them to attack target then when their sheilds drop, they fly off to places unknown. By the time you kill the dreadnaught, 3 or 4 usually come back from wherever and happy times.

are you sure ? I remember that I could stop my wingmens everywere, keep them in formation or order them to attack.
Have you tested both Q and C commands ? (i never remember which one is for autons and which one is for wingmens)

to make wingmen stay behind:
drop a crate somewhere safe like on a planet or friendly station, target it while remembering the direction of your target, order your wingmen to attack the crate, go in the direction of your target and proceed to fight it.
EDIT: q is for all wingmen and autons, but wingmen only respond to it. c is for a list of individual autons.

I did this once before. IT works great. And its so helpful.

How 'bout an exploit?
Have stealth armor installed and when given the mission to kill the unknown(s), come within SRS distance of the target and order your wingmen to attack. Since target is waiting on the player to appear, he'll just sit there while the wingmen slowly peck him to pieces...or, simply keep your wingmen in formation and snipe the target yourself using LR weaponery...target will still just sit there and not attack at all.

i think it won't appear near any bases, but it will follow you once it sees you. you can lead it to a trap(name here) wrote:so if it were to appear in range of a ringer collective it would die without doing anything?

What worked for me:
I got 5 or more of those algorythms that disable a ship - can't remember the name now, sorry. Anyway, I run towards the Phobos and wait for the first wave of the Ares Turret. After that I disable the Phobos, and start blowin' it up, with the wingmen shooting as well. Now, remember that this disable thing is temporary, that's why you gotta make sure you keep on using it 3 or 4 times in a row. My guns: Ares Plasma Cannon, Advanced Tritium Cannon, TM9 multitarget cannon, and some missiles. Killed 3 phobos like that, no wingmen lost.

bit of an old thread, but I found that going it solo by having your wingmen target a wreck worked best.
Mammoth100 w/ ion reflect = epic win.
