...and I've got an interesting choice of shields. I'm currently carring a Mammoth 25MW. There are Mammoth 50MW shields being offered at stations all over this system, and I'm highly tempted to buy one since I just acquired a spiffy new 150NX reactor. My other shield option is Trenton, and I can see why people tout it so much. That regen rate makes it very attractive, even with relatively low hit points. Which would you take?
Also, if you had blast plate with +regen on it, would you look seriously at light orthosteel?

With the trenton armor is even more important than with any other shield because some damage gets through.

Code: Select all

absorbAdj=        "100,100, 95, 95,  90, 90, 85, 85,  75, 75, 75, 75,  25, 25, 25, 25"
Laser and kinetic are completely blocked, 5% of particle and blast get through, 10% ion and thermo penetrate it, etc. Your armor is always taking small hits, so round-off error is your friend here.

If you are facing things with emp, device damage, radiation, or disintegrate those effects will go right through it to the armor, so if you can get a carbide armor (quadro, hexa, or octo, to protect from emp and ventari) and a patcher arm (spiders will be vulnerable with shields up) it's a very nice system, otherwise you are still vulnerable. I have never used a 50mw shield that early though, so I can't say how well it will work with blast plate, though the regen is a nice touch.

What ship are you using? If you are using the Wolfen (my personal favorite) then I think the Mammoth would be a better option, since you can run away easily when the shield gets low. If it was a Sapphire it's more of a preference, but I would still take the Mammoth. If it was a Freighter I can't say, but it can mount heavier armor, so Trenton leakage wouldn't be as damaging overall.

But if you only JUST got a 150, I'd wait until you nab a 250.

Regen isn't as amazing last I checked (cut down to some tiny fraction of its original regeneration speed), so I might consider trading it, if only for the level and HP (since that affects damage percentages last I knew, but if light ortho and blast plate are the same level, keep the blast plate I say).
My first mod, mostly done, still balance testing.

those heavy plates you can thow into space make great armor in the early to middle systems in case of damaged primary armor. But switch it as soon as possible as they are not that good vs weight. but that only works with the freighter.

If you're in a sapphire or wolfen and know how to recognize ventari you can use the trenton without special armor. Sustain and autons or wingmen will get you out of trouble with barbaries and dwarg masters, and you should be seeing auton shops.

Ventari are the first enemies to use tev-9s and do so from longer range than their disruptors giving you a chance to run, but if you haven't seen them before you'll probably mistake them for turbolasers at first.

radiation users are weak and the effect can be eliminated easily by carrying a barrel of decon paste. Using Monopole Dust on all four armor segments will protect you from EMP and Disruption, and a corporate trading post can get those on order. Get a patcher arm the same way if you don't have one and you can go a long ways on a trenton because it drops a lot of weapons into the damage range where roundoff effects are significant and high level armor resistances pretty much neutralize them at that point. Try Taikon *carbide with ithalium paste when you get to that point. That can take hits without a shield, especially octocarbide.
