I loved my inertialess drive; I had it installed in my one successful game from Point Juno all the way to Heretic.
I fly around with it disabled most of the time, but I find that its ability to hard-brake the freighter invaluable. It might not be as useful on the other ship types.

Among the things I used it for, in order of importance:

- precise positioning of long range sniping spots for base busting, especially when there are asteroids involved
- much easier to park my mules and Rama on a planet (for no backtrack I had to do this for every system, for 3 mules, Rama and a variable assortment of other autons)
- much easier to hide behind Ringer stations when baiting Phobos destroyers
- quick braking of an overloaded freighter when going for wrecks/docks

If you're just using it to brake, the inertialess drive doesn't consume much power.
