Wait for CSC missions? I got the impression they generated whatever was needed to do the mission when it assigned it to you. I can't remember ever waiting for the Korolov missions either, but of course almost every time I play I don't touch the Korolov until Charon because I've never really needed the money... and when/if I do go back I only get the mission to destroy the Charon fortress...

If there are no ships docked at the Korolov station that you can escort for your level, you have the option of waiting in that system for a freighter you can escort for your level to spawn from a stargate (or return from a delivery in the same system) and dock at Korolov. Otherwise, they tell you that "There are currently no missions available" or some such wording.
For Sale: One slightly used EI500 freighter. Hull damaged, primary weapon defective, shields inoperable. Must be towed to Dry-dock. Make an offer!!

400 creds is nothing. I occasionally got 1450 creds 8-) escorting EI200 as an apprentice, if you can believe it. As journeyman, I would never escort if I am offered less than 1800 (sometimes I can even get slighly more than 3k). My base fee as master is 3000. All vanilla Korolov.

Ahh, but you have to complete the 400 cred missions to get the XP to get the bigger missions. And also, the money you earn will get you the weapons you need to defend the bigger ships anyway.

I meant that in my very first escort mission I got 1450. But then maybe it's because I am piloting a Gundam  ...

The problem with Korolv is that you cannot go back to choose a different freighter, once you click decline, there is no going back. So you have to know ahead of time to see which price range is the best.
