Katana Star Cannon + Omni Turret = Cheap

I just discovered, using a ship equipped with omni turrets (that is, they're omni regardless of what you equip there) and a katana star cannon, along with a targeting ROM, its perfectly possible to take at most bases almost just outside of radar range, meaning the bases themselves pose no resistance whatsoever. I also took out the Antarctica using this tactic, sitting happily out of range.

I do believe that's a mod. However in vanilla the Katana is still probably one of the most useful weapons ever. I found one with Fast on it (steep price though) and used it in conjunction with the Gem of Sacrifice for an easy Iocrym kill
Good piloting in the Sapphire or Wolfen makes most omnidirectional weapons much less useful IMO...

My first mod, mostly done, still balance testing.

Fast ships don't need omni weapons (with the exception of the Hornet playership, perhaps, since its impossible to aim with). Its the slow bulky ships like freighters and battleships that need omni weapons. The ship I was using was my Agessor-class cruiser which comes with two omni turrets, since its pretty darn hard to dogfight with. On the other hand, its pretty cheap to be able to bombard enemy stations from a radar's width away.Wurmish wrote:Good piloting in the Sapphire or Wolfen makes most omnidirectional weapons much less useful IMO...

I don't use omnidirectional weapons much, the only advantage I can see for long range is that they pinpoint the target, whereas ballistic weaponry is restricted to your 40 facings. Which gets pretty darned hard to line up when you're more than 80 LS away. I'm assuming the units in Transcendence is LS, right? Or am I gravely mistaken? Likely the latter with my luck.

LS would be correct, yesWurmish wrote:I don't use omnidirectional weapons much, the only advantage I can see for long range is that they pinpoint the target, whereas ballistic weaponry is restricted to your 40 facings. You can do the same thing without an omni turret. Just move in close enough to target the base, fly off to between 110 and 120 ls in a cardinal direction from the base, stop, and turn to fire at it. Works better with Howitzers than the Katana against most bases, though. An omni just reduces the amount of fiddling to get the angle right.
Katana is better against ships, though, so using it against bases can save you a slot.
