My first time flying with a wingman was with Volkov. He did well as an AI pilot can and he helped me survive the Arena. He only lasted 4 systems before he got pummeled. I then got Rama who only lasted 4 systems (but that was my fault, he died over an exploding Urak Fortress)
Is it possible to have one (or more) make it to the end? If so, how?
Can you have more than one at a time?
I am playing the vanilla version.

I've had three at a time. If you think the area might be too dangerous for your wingmen you can tell them to wait where they are and come get them later.
C - for communication
Their letter
W- for wait
I like putting them on planets so no one can attack them.

Yes, it is possible to have more than one wing(wo)man at a time. There are actually three different ones that you can find over the course of the game.

As for their survivability, the problem is that their weapons and armor quickly become obsolete, and you have to either leave them on a planet or let them die. For those reasons, I usually either install the Upgradeable Wingman mod, or never get them in the first place.

I just get too sad when they die.

i hadn't figured out having them hide on a planet.

There's also the option of using them to set an ambush for light swarms. Works a treat on some enemies....if you're after something like an Ares Commune, put them between the gate and the station, at a SAFE distance (especially weaker ones). They'll take pot-shots at the re-inforcements, weakening (and hopefully destroying) some before you have to bother with them

Also, and this is highly important, do NOT use crate bombs near your wingmen, especially when you are using massive ones. I learned this with a modded Antares VII (a Q-ship varient I'm messing about with) sitting a little too close to an experiement I made featuring ~10 crates with 275 M5s in each + 5 crate of 300 M5s (275 gives you the best bang you can get, 300 gives you a plasma blast. P)u them all in the same place, and you get massive fireworks, surrounded by titanium barricades and detonated via a CRM100 Fatboy mine fired between barricades and left until it blew up at the end of the lifetime counter. The net result was...well.....I'm not sure, as I was about 70 LS away behind a planet, but the Antares was no longer there when I went back. Neither was the makayev factory, the britannia/manticore/etc guards, and some sandstorms on their way past to attack a CSC. Also about 6 other barricades I'd originally put down to shelter behind at what I thought was a safe distance, before deciding to play it safe, and about 8 wrecks.

G.O.D Mod. Gotta love that item spawning. :P

Sounds a bit like when they first tested nukes in water (the water made the explosion about 5X bigger than they had expected, and sunk a ship observing it).
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

Yes. Except with more white light. :P

Like: THIS (smaller version of what killed my wingman, set up so you can see the crates)

Goes to create....THIS:

It also killed all the guards on the Taikon station that are visible.
This picture shows the value of using barricades to prevent accidental detonation: If you are next to this when it blows, or ANYWHERE near it, it will kill you many times over :P

It's about the most extravagant way to kill stations in the world.

I'm going to try a few tests to see if there is ANY way to use a crate bomb except for blowing up friendlies........probably by dropping it near a Ranx base and flying round and round it. I doubt it'll work, but then, I'm mod-testing anyway, so I need something insane to do. :P

Nice BOO.....M!!!!

Never tried that, I've blown up crates and i have seen them explode a little bit, but that was massive!!!!! I gotta try that, and I will somehow mess it up and kill myself, but it will be cool anyway

Thanx!!!
