Usually I play with the Wolfen and I do fairly well.
On occassion I try the freighter and I do OK, but not as good as the Wolfen.
I even use Prophet's SR-71 Blackbird and I do almost as good as with the Wolfen.
However, the Sapphire and I never make it out of Eridani. Anyone use the Sapphire, and if so, how do you survive?
I would like to try it out, but the frustration of dying too quickly has made me ignore this ship.

playing with the sapphire is harder at the beginning because it's not tough as a wolfen and doesn't help beginner players with the omnidirectional laser like the freighter.
playing the sapphire is also harder in middle and late game because of the armor restrictions. (max 6 tons armor layers)
the sapphire however can be interesting while playing because the slots (8) are not restricted to weapons/non-weapons devices. this versatility of the ships can allow a high degree of combinations, making the ship a good candidate for innovative playing styles.

"harder in the beginning"
"harder in the middle and late game"
... so yeah, you got your answer. It's plainly and simply the most difficult one to play. Why? You need to be creative about it, as he had said.

Thanx.....I guess I can try one again, and be a bit more cautious. I think i will enjoy the versatility it offers.

I've played the saph a number of times, and I will agree it is the most difficult to play. The extra starting credits are a big help, if you're lucky you can buy a cannon accelerator at Starton right away and pummel the Centauri. Shields are epically important for the saph with it's armor limitations and pairing shields and armor resistances is more important than with the other ships.
It's very important to use the trade runs to make cash and always ensure you have the best equipment to help you survive. The saph will be very sluggish with a filled cargo hold so you have to manage your cargo very tightly when expecting combat.

There are a few armors it can't use, but the extra slot flexibility is worth it. It's only weaker until you start wanting more than four nonweapons (including the reactor and shield) That point should hit soon after St. K's. Maybe sooner if you get lucky with certain items.
You're not making it out of Eridani because the Sapphire's starting equipment is completely lame. You start with 1000 credits. Buy a decent gun with it or do a mission then you'll have about 1200 or 1300 credits. Enough for a cheap level 3 weapon. By the time you're done with Eridani you should have enough money to upgrade your armor or shield. Then you're in a slightly slower Wolfen with extra cargo space.

The playthough I just started is using the Sapphire which I play fairly often. I've only gotten 30 minutes into the game so far and part of that time is just explaining stuff, but things will pick up soon as I start looking for stuff to do.

And great job SparcMan on the playthrough. I watched episode 1, but not 2 or 3. I started a new game with the sapphire and I made it out of Eridani with a monopole deflector and a AK15 and a cannon accelerator. I may get mining gear too when I have the cash. Everyone's tips have helped a lot. Thanx

I always play with the sapphire. it is medium in all categories except for versatility, which is high. You cant run in with guns blazing like with the wolfen, but you don't get an omni laser. You have to play like a sniper, hanging back and lining up your shots. you also have to hide on planets with your nose out when you get overpowered. my favorite tactic is to get 2 solar panels and hide on the sun when the going gets tough. You can find little hidey holes where the sun graphics cut in. you can still shoot out, but are protected from fire from all directions

After finishing the game, I'll try playing it with the least possible deaths and no suicide.
