Just found a copy of the demo version 1.0 on a dos archive site.
It shows the copyright of 1988.

The 9999 limitation of the DOS version is the reason I looked for (and found) the windows version, but then the windows version has limited trillium deposits in a given galaxy so my games always stalled out. Was happy to see the web version had neither the 9999 limit nor the running out of trillium issue!
