Detachable ship parts

ok, so i was watching some startrek and there was this freighter that could detach it's entire cargo section.

anyway, i was wondering if it would be possible to implement something like this. I think that the general effect could be achieved by having THEM dock with YOU (not the other way around since you can't tow them).

It would work like this:
you dock w/ the attachement
goes to a screen saying: "loot""jettison""lock""undock""add upgrades*"
if "lock" chosen, it triggers some script event that orders the attachemnt to dock to your ship.

then to remove it... i dunno.. probably have to add some extra script to the playership dockscreen that detects attached ships and then gives a button "unlock attachement"

(btw- having an attachment should add it's mass to your slowing you down.)

the attachments should:
-*be upgradeable (like the upgreadable auton script) (ie, you can add on heavier armor, maybe swap out it's weapon if it has a slot for that, add on engines or something)
-give your ship any logical devices - ie if the attachment has a weapon, it should act as a secondary weapon that fires at the same time as your main one- kinda like how say, a CSC has multiple Tev9's or a defender has 2 secondary lancers along w/ the Mk3 howitzer. It should charge it's energy cost to your reactor.

Think anyone can help me make this?
