A5 Node Patch

I was wondering, is the A5 Node Patch a mandatory patch, or is playing the game without it ok? Would there be any side effects to not having it installed besides just losing a system?

Location: Hmm... I'm confused. Anybody have a starmap to the Core?

Not mandatory. It is okay to play without it, and you'd only lose one system.
