I know that in the past, there was an option when you had wingmen you could target a ship and use the squadron order 'escort'. However, I cannot find that function to impliment it into autons now. I do know that the function would allow the fleet to "guard" the target until recalled using 'form up'. Has this function ceased existing? It would make escort missions easier.

From what I know this is only possible with Player Drones mod?

I remember that it was with vanilla a while back. I think it was 0.98 if I remember right.
