There seem to be some mods on Xelerus which up the difficulty of the game thru various tweaks. But, they are all under different categories and finding them is not that easy. So, how about a Challenge mod category on Xelerus?

Also, I understand that some of these mods fit better into their current categories rather than a challenge category. The only way I can think of to work around this problem is by using tags or by switching completely to a tags system on Xelerus...

Switching completely to a tag system might be the way to go. I've been putting a lot of varied stuff in a single modpack and it looks like so have BrunnenG and Prophet and someone looking for eg shields may not think to look in mod packs instead of shields.

But wouldn't switching to a tag system mean that you'd need a major workup and you'd need to reclassify all the mods?

Yeah, it would be better, but I doubt bmbl is willing to do all that, and I don't blame him one bit.

It would mean reclassifying every mod. You could infer one tag from the mods current category, so without reclassfying every single mod, it would be possible to reach something like status quo in a tag based system.

I for one am also in favour of this, but can also see that it would be a lot of work

Yes, I can see that it would take a terrible amount of work, but isn't it one of those things which
1. becomes more necessary as the number of mods increases
2. becomes harder the longer you wait, as the no. of mods increases?

Maybe one you supercoder guys can help bimbel out? I'd love to help but I am only recently getting my head around lisp style coding( thanks to trans) and have no clue of how html or any website coding works...

rather than tagging all the mods, I would suggest we allow mod packs be uploaded. As long as the person uploading the pack tests it for conflicts, major bugs, and includes a readME.txt with credit for each individual mod with a link to it's official xelerus entry.

That might work in the short term but would become unmanageable in the long term and to make the mod packs in the first place, you'd need to know all the mods if you were looking for some very specific type of mods - such as the challenge mods I suggested above. And it'd take up a lot of bandwidth too...

While we are throwing up ideas, how about multiple contributers for each mod? For e.g, if a mod has graphics by x and code by y, both x and y should be listed as authors, right?

I like this idea and we already do have a couple of mod packages on xelerus :D
This is excellent http://xelerus.de/index.php?s=mod&id=544, although still it's not been updated for 1.0RCx
