There's this game called Transcendence that a Microsoft programmer called George Moromisato coded. You can find it here:

It dosn't have much of a plot yet, but it is still interesting and is easy to mod and extend. There's a good community behind it too.

NAEV: a remake of Escape Velocity
It lacks a bit on contents, but the game engine is solid and the trading is fun.
