Buying RAM

Talk about anything not related to Transcendence.

I'm getting a bunch of computer parts for my 16th birthday, but I have to buy RAM myself if I want to get the other parts I want. Now, the motherboard I'm getting can do up to DDR3 1333Mhz, but that stuff is awefully expensive compared to DDR2 and it's various frequencies. IS it better to have more gigs at a lower frequency or less at a higher?

So, what I need to know is which is best to go for? It's a gaming PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Wait until your 17th birthday and those stuffs should be much cheaper!

Well, frankly, you've got to tell the system configuration (including OS you use) and the capacity you need, in order to get reliable advice.

Umm... 32-bit XP, so a max of 3.25 gigs, and I want at least 2 gigs. And the motherboard can take DDR2 (533/667/800/1066) and DDR3 (1066/1333). I'm pretty sure that's all that's needed.

A little bit imperfect actually, but anyway.
The RAM standards are sort of chaotic these days, so I'd stick to DDR2-800 or 1066 maybe, which should be available at a reasonable price, for now.

What OS are you using? O_o And what are you doing that could possibly require that much RAM?

Yugi, don't be going Bill Gates on us now! :P
If you've ever dabbled in render farms, you'd want a whole lot more than just 8GB of RAM, that's for sure.

I did work on some 64GB ram machines when I did work experience at a university... they had three/four dual core processors each... *drool*

But seriously, I've gotten by easily with 512MB so far for about five years, so...

Hi all,

On work we use 512 MB on older machines and 1 GB on recent ones, with the CAD machines being 2 GB. Only for a very few apps had us had RAM problems. Indeed they are CAD apps that make renders out of models ^-^ like the point on render farms above !

EDIT #1 : as to Transcendence itself, it runs well on my 3 machines, a 800 MHz 512 MB PIII, an Athlon XP 2400 w/ 1 GB and a Core Duo 2.2 GHz 2GB. I feel the differences but not too bluntly...

I'll probably get a couple of gigs or more, depending on whether I go for 800MHz or 1066MHz.
