Charles River sparkling water

When I first saw this item in Transcendence, I thought two things.
1) George must live or have lived in Boston.
2) Earth must have changed a lot in 400 years.
I lived in southern Mass. for some time in the mid '90s and did antique restoration for two galleries in Boston. I don't remember the Charles River as being especially clean .
Of course, I never saw the river upstream from Boston; it is probably much cleaner up there.
