as promised, an animated sun ! this is the best I can do with CG, I've taken a NASA videoclip and ripped the frames, then builded the image and the mask.

put the 2 images in Resources folder and replace worlds.xml

a 6 frames animated sun

BTW I have 4 years old laptop with 512MB of ram and I have no slowdowns (winXP with GIMP, skype, client IRC firewall and antivirus open at the same time)
if someone has slowdowns, maybe i will consider doing a 3 frames animated sun.

Periculi massive increment of Topology and George addition of extension topologies in 0.99, convinced me that maybe adding more varieties of planets would be nice. :)

I repeat, I'm not a CG artist and this is just an example, but it's a good starting point. :)

Let me know if you like it.

That's a great idea. You know what else, digdug- what about some space anomalies? Using the unique feature for stations works with planets as well, so-

I had been thinking about creating some planet type uniques that could trigger some sort of research or discovery missions- but I would need some cool graphics to make it really unique, of course.

And whatever the graphic might be would sort of define what the potential mission would be- an alien artifact might lead you to discover a transpace jumpdrive tech, a living crystal structure in the fringes of the empire could lead to discovering an alien race that might offer some various assitances. Things of that nature, perhaps even some Dark Matter formations that could be 'harvested' for exotic materials.

In fact, any variations and expansions on the graphics set would be awesome- I d'ld the entire selection at the Dvlenk and OddBob vault in order to create some new unique ships and other specials to throw into the mods I am working on. But more is always welcome!

Well yes it can't be an anomaly (because it's obviously far off) but it doesn't make a half bad random background image (could be cleaned up a little). Too bad there's no way to make it only move a little bit when the player does (like the second lowest layer of space dust)

all you guys know that battle arena walls are generated from segments with appropriate coordinates, however you need to be Steve Nash to read the coordinates directly in code, so I tested them in excel, and it works:

Now I have a visual method to create new shapes easily... I hope :?

hmm... top notch thinking!

I like the image you made, but as OddBob said it makes for interesting natural features that could be added in. I am guessing that having the image move would make it appear to be much larger and more distant, as would be fitting for all those stars in a massive dust cloud.

Station and planet sized anomalies were more what I was thinking of, but go where you are inspired to go!

ok Periculi, I will try to make the nebula I posted more transparent to blend it as a background, both with the mask and image brightness. BTW the mask I ised is a 8-bit mask and I still don't know exaclty the meaning of NoPM="True". I did some testing with the navbeacons, that use a 8-bit mask, and this is the result:

About anomalies I have an idea, but I have to test it before with my limited skills :D

I experimented a bit...
is this more like a cheap space anomaly ?

it's animated, 5 frames, download from xelerus the test mod, that replaces starton eridani graphics, for a quick visualization of the effect.
