with the item data going to be in the next version you can do many interesting things.

filter screens by individual item data (like if you want to make a item virtual for loot screens now you can)
items that change with use (can be kinda done now but is clumsy)
if we had an onHit event for weapons then we could control everything about damage and have weapons change damage over time or even vary damage type over time

any other ideas?

How about, get highest/lowest resistance for armor and shields?

If you can get the UNID of the armor and shield that gPlayerShip has, then you could make a really nice luminous weapon...

adapting shields

multi-damagetype weapons

events triggered by combinations of items or items that change in the presence of other items (for example contamination of consumables if you carry also toxic waste in your cargo)

better control over weapons/devices upgrades, like different kind of upgrades at the same time.

I think you can already do multi-damagetype weapons...

well, I was thinking something similar to Betel and Oddbob weapons idea, maybe just adding a couple of new property/parameters to the weapons as a starting point.
