Well, my computer IS rather top of the line, so I don't know anything about speed problems. And, all I did was start a game, blow up some Centauri, and gate to the next system...but it worked. Without any configuring.

(Ubuntu 8.04 with OpenGL, Wine installed.)
(ATI HD2400 video card)

Now I can start playing my favorite space game again! :D :D :D :D

If you want to try, you can download and burn a LiveCD of Ubuntu and boot your computer from it...though, if you have less than 512MB memory and a 750mhz processor, you might want to use Xubuntu. Ask me if you need help!

A native port of Transcendence is in the works, but it's good to hear that Wine works well with it :)

Are you a developer? Does George have a small team now?

GambitDash is most definitely a developer. He has graciously offered to port Transcendence to Linux and based on his experience and talents, I believe he will be able to pull it off.

I am definitely looking forward to the results!

No problems :)

In case curious minds want to know, it currently gets about 3/4 of the way through the loading process. That means it displays the splash screen and animates the stargate, which is pretty significant :)

Future updates as events warrant.

Umm... While we're speaking of development, may I please please please PLEASE have the source to transcendence?
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

NICE! Now I can run pretty much all my games in linux again. Thanks GambitDash!

Wow, didn't hear about that. Awesome. If you need alpha and beta testers, you have a volunteer.

Update on the WINE: Don't know if this IS a Wine issue, but the gunfire sound only plays for about half the shots. Other than that, still no problems.

Transcendence has been known to run on Wine for quite a while. :) However, Gambit is making a native Linux version which will totally rock, and be much faster.

Speaking of, here's a bit of a teaser:

Yes, that's actually running. The glitches off to the side are likely a problem with the text rendering. And yeah, if the colors look off to you, it's because I still haven't bothered fixing the red-blue inversion -- I think it looks sorta retro, and keeps you from confusing these screenshots with any other port :)

Edit:

Hell, while I'm showing things off, I might as well show something decent:

Much better.

It seemed like only the second instance of a sound effect would play, and only if it were immediately repeated. Using the native dsound library fixed that problem for me, although sound still isn't quite right on my setup.

Awesome work! You've made an amazing amount of progress in a short time! Can't wait to try it out.

I can't avoid a straight line like that:
