The way I see it, there are really three basic ways to play this game.

1. You can play it normally, maybe with a few customizations, but nothing that ruins the balance of the game.

2. You can play it like a hardcore rogue-like where, if you die, you don't resurrect. Actually I think it would be nice if the game had a toggle-able option of removing your savefile if you die. Permadeath.

3. You can cheat like crazy just because you like having overpowered weapons and being an indestructible harbinger of doom.

I like #1. How do you play?

(Actually it occurs to me that this question has probably been asked a dozen times before, but...)

My style of play is what I like to call "The Merchant"
I always have a mule or 7 with me.
When entering a new system I check all the stations for good deals, sell loot etc.
I have a few choice mods loaded, always a different assortment.

If I die, I'm dead. No res.
Coming soon: The Syrtian War adventure mod!
A Turret defense genre mod exploring the worst era in Earth's history.
Can you defend the Earth from the Syrtian invaders?
Stay tuned for updates!

I think you can guess how I play. #3 definitely.
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

I like to play a couple of times "vanilla" only, when a new version comes out.
Then i like to throw in some enhancing mods, trying not to unbalance the game.

If I die, I like to resurrect and try again, usually I even self-destruct if the battle I just did wasn't as good as I was expecting it.

However the switch "no savegame" could be interesting for future versions when we will have global hi-scores :D

#2 for my real playthroughs - I only ever cheat like crazy when playtesting my mods (since usually I have to, seeing as many features are not seen until late game!)

I like to think I do #1.

Some of the mods I use are on the hard side, but I don't play permadeath style.

I'm sad to say that my playstyle is #0...

When i do play it is usually #3, for modding or for release

Yeah, we need a 4.

4) You only play to test a mod or prove a concept (while waiting for the next version to be released).

I would say I played 2 every time a new version comes out, until I find all the new stuff, and then shift back to 4 which seems to be the way I truly enjoy Transcendence.

Modding transcendence is what makes it truly fun for a good number of us, if not all of us long-timers here... :D

Oh, and I use balanced mods :P

I suppose that's true for me, too. I mostly play to try out how the new stuff I've implemented is working. Although I'll often as not stick with it and play through most of the game when everything is working right.

I play a combination of 1 and 2. I use absolutely no mods, but I don't start over when I die, I just take the score penalty.

#2. I tend to ironman it, myself, and I'm surprised others here do as well. Though I've tired of the encyclopedic knowledge requirements of Nethack, I still consider Transcendence to be a roguelike. As such, can't play it any other way.

I hope an option is put in to auto-delete saves on death, even if only to satisfy that masochistic streak that Nethack and its ilk bring out.
